THE NEW ZEALAND AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY’S EXHIBITION, 1871.
(ABRIDGED from the d. s. cross.) It must have been with no small feeling of pleasure to an Auckland public that it was called together yesterday to witness one of the most interesting exhibitions of the kind ever yet held in the province, and which we heartily hope will be eclipsed by the next annual show, and each one succeeding in its turn, until Auckland shall be reckoned worthy of ranking with the best exhibitions in this or any of the sister colonies. The early morning came in overclouded and at the same time threatened rain, but before 12 o’clock the sun shone forth and its rays descended with undue warmth, which, towards afternoon, was felt to be very oppressive, and with ladies almost overpowering. However, the day was on the whole all that could be wished for an alfresco exhibition. The arrangements were perfect, and everything was done to cause the show to pass otf without a single hitch occurring, from the time of the opening until the close of it. The cattle and sheep were so stalled and penned as to command both a front and rear view, and the judges had all facilities for thoroughly examining cveiy exhibit on tho ground, whether it was live stock, implements, produce, or flowers. The awards could not be considered as other than most fairly made. This was the opinion of those of the public competent to form an opinion. There were those, doubtless, who considered their claims had been overlooked, but this must always be the case. The judges could only act with strict impartiality, and to the best of their knowledge and judgment. This, we believe, was done in all cases, without a single exception. And, further, we believe the judges appointed to the several departments were competent to fulfil the duties imposed on them. The exhibition was one which we cannot but congratulate ourselves on. There were, it may be, cattle, sheep, and horses, which would have better been kept in their own pastures, as it -would have been difficult to say upon what points of merit the exhibitors looked for obtaining an award. But these after all were very few. The
show of sheep in the three classes exhibited, —namely, Leicesters, Lincoln, and the long-wool,—were far beyond our expectations. The cattle came next in importance, and after these the horses. There was not nearly so large a show of farming implements as we should have liked to see ; but this was to a certain extent compensated by the superior manufacture of many of them. Of the exhibits under the head of “ swine” not very much was to be urged in their favor. As a rule, they were coarse and altogether deficient in fleshproducing qualities. It is a profitable department of the farm, which has been as much neglected in the North Island as it has been studied in the South. We. are almost ashamed to say that the exhibition of dogs and dogesses foi ned the chief attraction with a great number of visitors. There were an immense number of entries. And dogs of every known and unknown variety of breed were present, the owners anxiously competing for the prizes. There were a great number of entries in every class.
