MEETING OF THE BUILDING TRADE.
A meeting of carpenters and builders was hehl in the Academy of Music to rearrange the present system of conducting the trades. Mr. Bagnall was elected to the chair, and communicated the result of the labours of the committee appointed to investigate certain alleged evils in connection with the trade.—Mr. Gould proceeded to read the result of the deliberations of the commit!ee, regretting at the same time the small attendance of the trade. After some observations by Mr. Whitelock, who was announced by Mr. Plaice, who explained the resolutions at length, and ivas followed by several other speakers. Mr. Gallagher moved, and Mr. Lardner seconded, that the subjoined resolutions should he adopted, and they were carried, with tlie exception of No. 3, which was negatived. After this it was proposed that a shilling subscription should he made for the purpose of defraying the expenses of the proposed association. Ist rrsolulion : That your committee being impressed with the importance of enlisting the moral support of tho general public in our cause, beg most distinctly to disclaim an} 7 thought or intention to organise the trades union as generally understood in older countries, hut simply to try by united organisation the exercise of friendly discussion, to check the abuses or corruption that have entered into our trade, and under which we are now labouring. 2nd. Resolved that your committee consider that the present reckless and injudicious style of tendering for work pe-haps one of the chief causes of the present very unsatisfactory and profitless results of the building trade.—The following resolution was submitted to the meeting, hut not carried : —“ Resolved that your committee consider that they are altogether unable of themselves to decree or carry out successfully any means whereby the state of things may be remedied or improved, without the co-operation of the timber merchants, iron merchants, architects, &c., who may feel an interest in the trade.”— The following motion was then put and carried: —“ That 1 his committee deem it desirable that an association of carpenters and builders be formed for tho purpose of carrying out this and other resolutions, and that a list of prices is considered beneficial to the trade and public.”
