MINING.

Abraham Lincoln. —This claim is next the Sir Walter Scott G.M. Co.’s lease, Upper Ivaraka. A crushing for the company has just been completed at the Sir Walter battery. 40 tons were put through, giving a return of 32ozs. sd\vts. 18grs. melted gold, this, together with the yield from specimens picked from the stone and crushed separately, makes a total return of an ounce and a half to the ton. Work is going on, and more stone is being got out. A crushing of 20 tons for the company’s tribute is now going on, and is expected to turn out even better than the stuff just finished. We are glad to see some returns from this district, which has been for some time in a state of quiescence. Yankee Doodle. — This ground has been amalgamated with the adjoining claim, the Evelyn, and an application has been made for a lease. Arrangements are being made for immediately taking out and crushing 100 tons of stone from the reef now in hand. The reef is from four to ten feet wide, and their blocks arc all ready cleared for stoping, a winze being sunk through. Work in this neighbourhood is being vigorously pushed ahead, and good returns may soon be looked forward to.

Tiie Golden Spur. —A partial clean up for this company- took place yesterday at Bull’s No. 1 Machine, but as they intend to keep one of the batteries employed, no retorting will take place at present. The British Claim, Ilape Creek, are sending down 10 tons to be crushed, and when they have finished, a parcel of some 40 or 50 tons for the Moa tributers will be crushed, and should the yield be satisfactory, large quantities of stone will be sent down. The Savage shareholders arc also ready with a paddock of stone as soon as they can obtain the use of the battery. Tookey Company. —On Saturday conn munication with the air shaft was opened up at the 200 foot level, and the ventilation of the mine was much improved in consequence. Driving from this level is now being continued towards the main reef. They are now some 40 feet in, the distance intended to be driven is 180 feet, and it is 320 feet from the shaft to the Caledonian boundary. the shaft has not yet been resumed, the water not yet having drained off, but in a very short time the manager expects to be getting oh with it.

The Bendigo Independent. —A crushing for these tributers was finished last night at Westons battery, but the retorting was not finished in time to be brought to town. The yield, however, is a good one. The Alburnia tributers are clashing with the ten head vacated by the North Devon, and the plates give indications of a good return. The El Dorado commenced crushing at the battery as soon as the Bendigo stuff was through. There are some thirty or forty tons to be reduced, but not knowing the quality of the stone cannot say what return may be expected.

{I [City of Dunedin. —The crushing going on at Russell’s battery lias improved a good deal in appearance for the last two days, and a better return is looked for at the next clean up. In the mine the reef is looking very well indeed, better than it has done for some time past. Black Forest, llape Creek.—The manager showed some very nice specimen stone which was taken from this claim the day before yesterday. He reports that it came from the same leader on which the George Stevenson is working, and close to the boundary of the two claims. The stone is quite similar in appearance to that we have seen from the George Stevenson and should they be fortunate enough to get the same run of gold their ground will be a valuable piece of property. George Stevenson. —Some more good stone was taken yesterday and the day before out of the same leader which gave such an excellent return from the specimen crushing the other day. They seem to have come on to an excellent run in this claim, and it has caused a little stir in the creek, and will be the means of inducing men to prospect the creek more thoroughly than it has been done hitherto. Wood's Tribute, Tookey Company, are crushing another lot of over 40 tons at the Manukau battery, which will be finished about Thursday. There is a large quantity of quartz coming from the company’s ground, and the yields are very good all round. Bright Smile. —The general clean up at Soutcr’s machine last night yielded lGSozs. of gold from about 200 tons put through. Crushing will be carried on at the Prince Alfred battery for some time, where the company have engaged ten head by the week. Queen of the Thames. —The directors have decided upon letting a contract for driving 50 feet 011 a reef running in the direction of the City of London lode, which they expect to meet at 150 feet. From the appearance of the reef on which they intend to drive, they expect to get out good crushing stuff as they go along.
