LATEST FROM THE SOUTH.
Welmxgton*, 2nd. 4.20 p.m. - The s.s. ‘ City of Adelaide ’ has arrived. Mr. McLean, in the House to-day, contradicted the reported death of Captain Preece and five men. An advertisement appears in the Melbourne ‘ Argus,’ signed by McMechan, Blackwood and Co., to the following effect:— “ Additional Postal Service to New Zealand.—The undersigned will despatch one of their steamers every fortnight to Auckland, by the cast and west coasts of New Zealand. I lie ‘ Albion,’ or other steamers, will proceed to Auckland, calling at Port Chalmers, Lyttleton, Wellington, and Napier.” The ‘Tararua’ or some other steamer will proceed to Auckland, calling at Greymouth and Taranaki. The Christchurch races arc expected to be a great success, and active preparations are being made t or a ball to be given in honour of the visit of Lady Bowen. The ‘City of Adelaide’ sailed for Sydney direct last Saturday.
