' , A deputation of goldfield officials waited upon sft Sheehan yesterday, asking him to give them a holiday on the '3oth instant/St. Andrew’s; day, when -it.- is intended;tp a series of sports apd entertainments in which the Volunteers will play a conspicuous part. Mr Sheehan acceded to the request, and sug* gested ; that a portion of the profits, if any, arising from the entertainments should be devoted to the aid of the Thames Hospital. This was agreed to, and the deputation Withdrew/after thanking Mr Sheefian' '’for'the courtesy with which he had acceded to their request. * ;5 . "• - •/■ ' • ..m •>. A deputation consisting of Messrs Hunter, Hannaford, Lascclles, Salmon, Mcpopncll, Garvey, Gellion, Bull, and pthprg' halted upon Mr Sheehan, the Goldfields Secretary yesterday, requesting him to use his'infiuence in promoting the extension of the tramway to the Upper Tararu district, so as to enable the Vulcan and other claims in the neighborhood; to obtain transit to the Beach. Mr Sheehan said he would give instructions to the engineer, Mr Millett to report upon the best and- cheapest mode' of harrying out the object which the deputation had in view. He believed that a large sum would be placed upon the Estimates during' the next session of the Provincial Council; for public Works on the Goldfield. - Mr Sheehan promised to bear in mind the request of- the deputation, and’to.give it hisisupport, <n«; > A meeting of Ihe. Wlaiotaln J)istrict Board was to have been held yesterday at 2p,ru., at the Governor Bowen Hotel, but the only members present were Mr Davies (in the chair), and Mr" Rowe ; consequently there not being enough members present to form a quorum, the meeting adjourned until this (Thursday) morning at 10 o’ciock.
* At the -Police Court yesterday morning there was rather a large attendance of spectators anxious to hear. a full, true, aud particular account of the late fight at Tararu. A letter from the Freemason’s was read asking for the co-operation of the company ,in getting up Caledonian, gomes for the 30th iust, and a 'challenge was sent in, five members of the craft offering to file 's! friendly rifle match against five members of the company. Tbei challenge was accepted, the match to form part of the intended sports, and a committee of five were - appointed to assist the Masonic Committee juif making fib; arrangexhehtg in connection with the gathering on the 30th instant. Some new members were elected, and the contract of Mr Muir for nt&king tfip tupics and; kilts Was accepted. A number of the corps .will be in uniform by the 30th, everything requisite for about 50 suits of uniform being now on hand.
The- Thames Band, Hop: held their usual fortnightly meeting last evening in the Karaka r schoolroom. Mr j. W. ’Speight presided. Messrs J. P. Jones and B. addressed the r juveniles. ~ -Tbe .intervals were; filled up jwitH recitation ‘by some of the which were well; A very; largely attended' meeting of carpenters was- held last night. The room at the* Wharf Hotel not being large enough, an adjournment was made to the Pacific. There were about ninety members .of ■ tb® trade present. Mr Baghall was called to the chair. The principal business of the meeting was ;the. appointment of a committee of : eleven members who are to draw,.up a set of rules, having for their object the formation of a Carpenter’sSoiety, and a uniformity of prices to be charged for all work done by the trade The committee, meet op Friday night, and the rules when 1 ready will be submitted for approval to a general meeting to be called for the purpose. ; ; '• i)‘. cl The Herald of the Ist inst., states that a deputation of gentlemen interested in Coromandel waited on the Provincial Government yesterday for the purpose of representing the necessity of increased wharf accomdatioim At present the accommodation is wholly inadequate. The Government expressed themselves favorable to the object of the deputation, and promised to submit their representations to the Provincial 1 Council, the necessary surveys and all other information to be sent in meanwhile.
