RAISING THE “WIND” ON BOARD THE S.S. GOLDEN CROWN.
To the Editor of the THAMES GUARDIAN. Sir ,— I was a passenger by the ‘ Golden Crown ’ yesterday, and I boarded her in Auckland for the Thames with just 4s Id in my pocket to pay steerage fare and the one penny charged at the Tararu wharf. To my great consternation, after leaving the Auckland wharf, I saw it announced on different parts of the boat that the fares were 10s and 5s instead of 7s 6d and 4s, as heretofore. What I complain of is that the owners of the ‘ Crown ’ did not give notice of the intended rise of fares through the colums of the newspapers, and thus have prevented so many of the passengers being duped. The “ rise ” will do good. The ‘ Crown ’ will soon have to compete with a boat called The Opposition. —l am, &c., Spider.
