The Odd Fellows have decided to hold their anniversary celebration on the 16th proximo. An adjourned meeting of the Mining Board was to have been held last evening, but there being only Mr Daly, Mr Hays, and the Secretary, present, it adjonmed for. want of a qnornm until Monday next, at 7 p.m. The object of this meeting was to consider a petition, to be forwarded to Wellington, praying the Legislature not to pass the new Mining Districts Bill in its present shape. We observe that Mr Barnett, of the Warwick Arms Hotel, Shortland, is making great improvements upon his premises. Mr> Hibble has been employed to paint and decorate the front of the establishment, and he has done his work in a most creditable manner. All who pass Mr Barnett’s cannot help noticing how well his place looks, especially when compared with some rather dingy-looking buildings in the vicinity. Wc should like to see some of the tradesmen in Mr Barnett’s neighborhood .imitating his example, and rendering their places of business as attractive As possible. ‘; i ' i A,cricket match will be played to-day, on the Cilub ground, Shortland, between an eleven of the Thames Cricket Club and the members of the Theatrical profession at the Thames. The following team will play foT the Club:—Messrs Howard, Kidd, F. Simpson, Clayforth, Sandes, Pulleine, Barnett, Sykes, Dickson, Alderton, Lascelles. Wickets will be pitched at one o’clock sharp. Wc believe that the Hazclbank Goldmining Company’s case has tenninated. Litigation had been carried into eight Courts.. The law expenses incurred are roughly estimated at L 2,000. The mine could at this time be disposed of in paid-np shares to the value of L 40,000. We have received the following Australian newspapers from Mr Samuels, of the Varieties, viz., the Leader , Australasian, Toivn and Country Journal of the 14th inst., also the A ustralian Journal,
A charge of assault was preferred yesterday against Mr J. MeYey Baird, schoolmaster, and his assistant, for flogging a boy. The flogging was proved by the defendants not to have been a severe one ; the charge was, therefore, dismmissed, and very properly so. At the close of the case, the book containing the improper remarks, admitted to have been written by the complainant, was shown to the reporters, and there can be no hesitation in saying that a boy who could deliberately write the sentences complained of deserved a good sound thrashing.— Morning News. The Goldfields; Secretary, Mr John Sheehan, M.P.C., arrived this afternoon from Auckland, for the purpose of making arrangements for carring out the new Government goods wharf, extending from Burke-strcet. It .will be ( remembered that, a deputation waltdd upofirtlie t>eputy*Supcriutcndcnt last Monday, in reference to the matter. We understand all the arrangements will be completed to-morrow, and that Mr Johiii-Taylor, the successful tenderer, will proceed with the work without any further delay. In the debate that ensued in committee of the Dioscesan Synod, on Thursday, upon the J Consideration of the report brought -up by the committee appointed to consider the different trusts of the , English Church, vc.’y warm feeling was evinced. The report was ultimately ignored, by a motion being enried that the chairman of the committee do leave the chair. The report came, therefore, to be neither in the possession of the Synod nor that of the committee ; and wc should suppose that the proposal made by one reverend member, that-the-report be put in the fire and consumed, may be at last carried out, _ The City of Adelaide, 1,324 tons, Walker, arrived from Sydney on Thursday night. The Ballarat police cannot put down Chinese lotteries. In a case heard on Monday against two batches of supposed partners, the prosecution utterly, broke down. The Courier reports the saying of Mr Gaunt, the presiding magistrate, as follows : —“ Mr Gaunt, at the conclusion of the first case, 1 made some comments upon it from which he state of matters existing can readily be fathered. He said it was useless for him to line any of the Chinamen, for all they had to do was to appeal on the gr ound that evidence of their beneficial interest was wanting, and the convictions would be quashed. Tf the Legislature, he said, wanted to put a stop to these gambling houses, which were openly and fairly conducted, perhaps more so than similar European houses, they could do it l y special cnactmeut. For his own part, he thought that such establishments as Joe Thompson’s and Ogilvy and McDonald’s, who advertised that odds were laid from 5 5 to £2OO, were quite as great a nuisance,”
