THE DISTURBANCE AT TARARU.
To the Editor of tbe Tiiames Guardian. Sir, —I must admit that 1 was somewhat surprised on reading your issue of this morning, at not finding any comment on the disgraceful scene which was witnessed here yesterday. The first question which suggests itself to me is this. Where were, or more properly speaking where are the police ? I ask is it possible that in a civilized or (professedly so) country like this, these barbarous and disgraceful exhibitions cau take place not only under the very eye of the law, but even near a Magistrate’s house? Is it because we have not sufficient numerical strength in the police force to be enabled to spare a man for our district, Echo answers yes. There is not a doubt that our police force is too limited for so large a district, and the sooner the powers that be look to this the better.—l am, &c., Pax. Tararu, Oct: 25.
