WHITAKER AND LUNDON.
To the Editor of tlie Thames Guahdax. Sir, —From observations I have heard from various persons, it appears to me that the effect of the telegram published iu your issue of Friday last, respecting the petition of Messrs. Whitaker and Lundon to the House of Representatives is, not properly understood. No doubt, I occupy a very unpleasant position in being specially charged with making untrue accusations by a committee of the House ; but it must be remembered that the report of the committee has been made without hearing my evidence, and I believe solely upon the evidence of Messrs. Whitaker and Lundon. True ; I had an opportunity of proceeding, at my own expense, to Wellington, and appearing before the committee, but as my claims as against Messrs. Whitaker and Lundon have long ago been definitely settled by legal tribunals, I had no pecuniary interest in the petition of those gentlemen for compensation out of the public purse, and I did not, consequently, feel called upon at such a cost to meet my old opponents in an arena in which I have already signally defeated them. It remains to be seen whether the House will endorse the recommendations of the committee, and until that point is determined, and the evidence on which the committe have acted is published, I trust the public will suspend their judgment. —I am, &c., James de Hirsch.
