POLICE COURT.— Saturday.

Before W. Fraser, Esq., R.M. Drunkenness. Frank Kidd was charged with being drunk and incapable, in Owen-street, on the previous night, to which charge he pleaded guilty, and was fined 10s. and costs. Vagrant Cattle. —James Smith was charged with permitting two horses to wander at large in Maekay-street, on the Kith inst. The defendant pleaded guilty, and was fined ss. and costs. Assault. —Charles Henry Stewart was charged by James Weeks with assaulting him at Punga Flat, on the 19th inst., by striking him on the right eye with the clenched fist.—Mr. Lascelles appeared for the complainant, who stated : I am a miner, living at Punga Flat, and know defendant: I am suffering from rheumatics, and Wednesday being a very wet day, 1 did not go on to the claim ; and the next day, when I went to work as usual, the defendant called me a loafer, and on my remonstrating with him he struck me over the left eye, and said he’d knock a month out of me. It was a violent blow, and drew blood. The defendant and myself are shareholders in the same claim —the Courier—l was working my own share.—The defendant did not deny that he struck the complainant, but said he was greatly provoked by the names Weeks called him.— For the defence William Long was called, who said he heard some high words pass between the parties. Stewart called Weeks a loafer, and Weeks called Stewart an old wretch, and so forth, and witness thinking “ it was getting rather hot,” went away into the drive, and did not see how the matter ended.—The It.M. fined defendant 20s. and costs. Music and Dancing. —An application by William Walsh for permission to have music and dancing in his licensed house, the Scotia Hotel, on Tuesday evening next, was granted.
