AMUSEMENTS.
Theatre Royal.— Camille,” or “The Fate of a Coquette,” was produced at this place of .amusement by particular desire last evening, and the piece was as usual well placed on the stage. It was however very discouraging to the management to be disappointed by the non-appearance of Mr O’Brien, who, from what we could gather was “’indisposed.” Nothing is so disagreeable to a manager as to have to put up with the absence of a certain character by the old excuse of indisposition. Miss Bowring and Mr Steele were all that could be dosired, and Mr Keogh was more “ than could be desired,” as he had to take two parts, namely, Compte do Varville and Gaston, leaving the audience in a perfect fog as to what he ready was acting. Tomight this company will appear at the American Theatre, Shortland. Academy of Music. —The enteri ment commenced here last evening wrik the well-known comedy entit ed ! e “Game ofSpeculation.” Mr Affable Hav.k was never better represented than L.; night in the person of Mr Hoskins. T.ie cool sc in'eat egal of this actor was the life and soul of the piece, and, to use an old hackneyed expression, shewed a keen appreciation of his part. That Mr Hoskins is the most talented comedian that we have seen in this town there is not a doubt, and this is fully borne out by the clever manner in which he rendered the character of Affable Hawk last evening. Mr B. N. Jones, as Sir Henry Lester, might havebeen a great acquisition to the cast had lie performed in a little more gentlemanly style. It certainly does not look very aristocratic to see Sir Henry making spasmodic efforts to stretch his legs from one wing of the stage to the other. His voice and make up were thoroughly in keeping, but the callesthenic developments were not quite recherche. Miss Bray, as Miss Hawk, carefully added her share to the cast, and. so also Mrs Hill as Julia. AVe are pleased to state that Miss Colville is so far convalescent as to be able to appear this evening in her original character of Lady Teazle.
