PETITION RE INNES.
Tq the Editor of Tim Thames Guardian. Sir, —I was much pleased to see that a petition was lying at your office for signature relative to the of tho D.A.C. General Inncs. No one has had more business transactions with him than I have, and of all he was one of the few that never looked for or expected recompense. He was superior to all in that respect, and I feel convinced that his misfortune may bo traced to some false friend who, knowing his weakness to refuse a favor, more particularly if tinged with distress, took a mean advantage of his kind heart and obtained from the Government chest what (if lie had been possessed of) would have becu advanced from his own pocket. Ilis sen ence was five years’ imprisonment, whereas all who knew him must have felt that one day’s incarceration to him was a heavier punishment than ten years to the ordinary swindler. Let the Wanganui men hear of the position and they will sign it to a man, for they never knew or heard of aught but what was good, noble, generous, and brave of the late D.A.C. General luues. —I am, &c., Thomas Rayson.
