KAUWAERANGA DISTRICT BOARD.
There was' a meeting of the Kauwacranga District Board hold last evening. Present: (Mr. Scott in the chair) Messrs. Mill, Wallnut, Lipsey,' Cameron, (Engineer): Perston’ (Secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Messrs. Newbury andThackery presented a petition from the inhabitants of 27, praying that immediate steps be taken to form Sealey street from the Imperial Hotel to the tramway. The petition set forth that this being the ccfttral street, it would be the most desirable route, and would confer a benefit on the whole block. That with the exception of the erection of two small bridges, noihing has beeu done for the convenience of the inhabitants of the block in .this matter, and that they are suffering great inconvenience, it being at present almost impossible to induce any carters or. draymen to cart firewood, manure, &c., to any pa r t of the block from the impassible state of the roads. Mr. Tliackery, in support of i We petition, said that if the central street was constructed by the Board, the inhabitants would themselves construct sideways, &c. The inhabtants felt that they had been neglected in the matter by the Board. Mr. Lipsey said the Board was not to blame in the matter. The Chairman said it was the intention of the Board to attend to this matter, and with the assistance of the people themselves, they would, before next winter, be able to effect a great alteration for the better in this part of the district. If the road were made up to Hill street, access could be had by either of the spurs. Mr. Cameron (Engineer) stated the expense of founing Upper Sealey street,&c., would be about L4OO. A letter was read from Mr. Tyler, solicitor, stating that he required a retaining fee of £5 before acting as solicitor to the Board. It was resolved to retain Mr Tyler’s services as solicitor to the Board. Cor.REsroNCE, &c. A letter was read from R. Millett, Assist ant Government Engineer, stating that he would give no decided opinion as to the tramway, without the plan of the line being laid before him, showing the proposed distauce from kerb of footpath, width of gauge, and width of roadway intended to be occupied by the line. From F. C. Dean, secretary of tbeWaio talii Board requesting the attendance of the members of the Kauwaeranga Board at a confeience on the subject of street tramways, on Wednesday next, October 18th, at the Governor Bowen Hotel, at half-past 2 p.m. It was resolved that as many of the Board as could possibly attend should be present, as this was an important matter. From 11. H. Lusk, Provincial Secretary, stating that as soon as the present powder magazine has been removed, ihe Government will have no objection to the dedication of its site for a road as requested. From E. Dufaur, clerk to MacCormick and MacKeclinie, solicitors, stating that they have not yet received the necessary information to enable them to prepare
affidavits, &c., in the matter of Workman y. Burgess, and requesting that the neces--1 Sary information may be furnished immediately. A petition was, read, numerously signed by 180 persons, carrying the proposed tramway along Pollen-street. The petition was received, and it was agreed that the matter should stand over until after, the conference with the Waiotahi--Board, and then that a decision be given as soon as possible. Mr Lipsbsy >said he there was an opposition petition in favor of the Pollen-street- line. " ■ *■= The Secretary said this petition had not come to hand. The Board said they must balance the two petitions, and pronounce the best for the public; Mr Wallnutt said when Rollestonstreet was carried on, Pollen-street would only he a second-rate thoroughfare. Letter from J. Murray, asking to be excused from performing the contract for which ho lately tendered. The Board resolved that Mr Murray must forfeit £l4 of the deposit money paid by him. It was stated that notice would be immediately issued calling upon the ratepayers to pay their rates forthwith, as money was much wanted for improvements, &c. A bill was sent in from W. McKay for bnrying 27 dogs, at Is per dog. It was resolved not to incur this expense for the future, and that the Board laborers would attend to this matter. The following statement of accounts was laid before the Board :
Mr. Cameron, Engineer, said some portion of Pollen-street required repair. There was a good many holes that required filling up. The matter was left to Mr. Cameron to attend to, and to get the work done as soon as possible. , Mr. Cameron said there was a portion of the road near Mr. Workman’s, which will have to be made passable for carts, in view of the temporary closing of Wil-loughbv-street by the road contractor during the progress of the work. A deputation, consisting of Messrs Grove, Millelt, and others, waited upon the Board in reference to Cook-street, stating that they could raise about £ls, and asking if the Board would assist them. This would be the main thoroughfare to the Hape District now that Wi dough bystrect was going to be shut up for two months. In reply to a question by the Chairman, Mr. Cameron said the Government bad not decided where the terminus of the Hape Creek Tramway was to be. Mr. Cameron said it would cost £75 to make a job. The length was about 6 chains. Mr. Grove, in reply to the chairman, said there would be no difficulty as to interference with private property that he was aware of. It was stated that there was the Govern ment grant of £SOO voted in aid of the district, of which there was a portion avilable. After some discussion it was resolved that the Board should visit the spot next morning. The Board then adjourned.
