Four more applications for leases at the Coromandel Goldfield arc notified in Saturday’s Provincial Gazette . Applications have been made for the registration of the Shamrock Coromandel Goldmining Company, and the Golden Ring Goldmining Company. A statement of the accounts of the province of Auckland for the quarter ended September 30, appears in Saturday’s Provincial Gazette. Total revenue and receipts for the quarter, £60,040 Bs. At the Academy of Music on Saturday night the house was literally crammed to witness the fifth performance of Formosa, which passed off in as successful a manner as on any of the previous representations. 1 An accident which, however, did not result dangerously as might have been expected, happened in Brown-street, Grahamstown, on Saturday afternoon. A man, in stepping out of au omnibus, fell to the ground, and injured his leg somewhat sciously. The Theatre Royal was crowded on Saturday evening, and the well-known drama the Callccn Bawn, which was capitably acted, was received with great favour. It was followed by the two act comedy, the Toodlcs. The present baths will .be found superior m some respects to the old ones. Thpy ar« further down the wharf, and consequently in deeper water, thus allowing several more hours for bathing. More room has also been securely fenced in and a considerable; addition thereby made to the length of the swim- , , xnjpg bath. By our advertising columns we notice that a reduction has been made by one of our publicans in tbc price of Colotual beer, which is now obtainable at his bar at the low price of fourpence per pint. This reduction has given umbrage iu several quarters, but we fa’l to see why any man should be compelled to charge more for his commodities than he cons'dcrs a fair profit. “ Smalt profits and quick returns ” is a motto displayed in many tradesmen’s windows, and we suppose that it applies equally to ihc publiean or d”aper. Whether by giving increased facilities for getting d ’unk, the actual crime, for it is nothing less, is increased is a ve-y debateable point; but statistics published on the Continent, where beer aDd alcoholic liquors are much cheaper than with us, point rather to the reverse. Mb. Harbison, storekeeper, Tauranga. arrived at the Thames on Saturday, having come overland on horseback, via Olunemuii. He tefls us be experienced no difficulty whatever in passing through that portion of the route, which is usually looked upon astaboed to the Fakcha. We have no doubt that ere long there will be no obstacles thrown in the Way of transit to and from Tauranga by way of Obinemuri, and that a good bush road will scon (jonnect us with the East Coast. • The Auckland Morning News of Saturday, says George Spray, the late prosecutor in the charge of against John Crosbie was, upon his attempting to leave Auckland on Friday afternoon by the ‘ Nevada,’ apprehended by Detective Teraahan on a charge similar to the one he liad preferred against Crosbie. The case came on for hearing on Saturday morning at the Pofice Court, and was remanded until Thursday next. Mr. Brogden, the railway contractor, we learn by an Auckland paper, took his passage by the ‘Wellington’ on Saturday morning, and is now 1 on his'way to the seat of government in that vessel. There will consequently he time now for arranging his contracts before Parliament breaks up, instead of taking powers to do this after the prorogation of Parliament.

Supposed Drowning at Onehunga.— The body of the unfortunate fireman Ferguson, who is believed to have been drowned by fal'ing over the wharf, Onehunga, while proceeding to his vessel, the Wellington, has txjcn recovered. It was found on Saturday afternoon floating in the Maoukau harbour, about a mile below where the steamer was going at the time of the accident. It was brought on shore, and an inquest will be held this afternoon upon the body at the Wharf Hotel, Onehunga. The blame of this accident and loss of life must he laid on the Provincial Government, who, in iheir e_treme parsimony, have neglected hitherto to place a li<dit ou the wharf, notwithstanding a rider to the verdict of at least one coroner’s jury, and strong representations ou the pa r ts of masters of vessels, and also the Harbourmaster. The present unfortunate sufferer from this neglect, whose name ?s John Ferguson, from Campbeltown, Argylesh" - e, was a very steady man, has been nine years in different steam vessels on this coast, and was perfectly sober on this night. There were at the time three steamers, besides other vessels, lying at the wharf, and, consequently, during the evening there must necessarily be a good deal of passing to and fio. On Thursday evening the EngPsh mail per ‘ Nevada’ was brought from Auckland, and put on board the ‘Wellington’ and work was going on long after dark, and yet there was no light on the wharf. —Cross correspondent.
