A portion of tlie following appeared in our second edition of yesterday : Gambetta’s party have given up the attempt to have the French Assembly dissolved. The English are subscribing liberally to the starving Persians. The French Assembly have passed a vote by 523 against 24 eulogising Thier’s Government. The island of St. Thomas has been visited by a hurricane, by which 6,000 houses have been destroyed and 200 persons killed. A revolution has broken out in Mexico, headed by Diaz. Thiers has been congratulated by European Powers and by the Pope on the prolongation of his term of government. Ferre and two Communists have been sentenced to death. The French Assembly are considering the proposition of sending Communist prisoners to Magdalena Bay. Walter Montgomery, the actor, was married in London on the Ist September, and committed suicide the next day. No cause has been assigned for the deed. Puerto Plata, in San Domingo, Las been destroyed by fire. The cholera rages in Dantzic, Altona, Leipsic, and Vienna. The Marquis of Lome has been appointed Governor-General of India. Eight thousand engineers in London are demanding a reduction of the hours of labour. The Germans were to have commenced the evacuation of France on the Ist of October. Allah Pasha, Grand Vizier of Turkey is dead. The Duke D’Aumale, son of the late Louis Phillippe, has been appointed Governor of Algeria by Thiers. The Mexicans have seized some American vessels in the Gulf. Indictments for manslaughter have been founded against the President and Superintendent of the Staten Island Ferry Company, for a boiler explosion. A committee has been appointed by the French Government, to investigate the army capitulations during the late war, commencing with Sedan. An alleged secret treaty was made at Versailles, about new year, between Russia and Prussia, by which the two empires were to combine and force Austria to release Bohemia, Moravia, Silesia Duchy of Salzburg, Galatia, and Dalmatia. Russia was then to cede five towns on the Baltic to Prussia. Russia and Prussia were then to make a campaign of conquest in the East, and the conquered territory was to be equally divided between the two powers. There is no abatement of the cholera in Russia. There are 150 deaths daily 1 ". The Queen still continues very ill.
