ACCIDENT AT THE UNA COMPANY’S

MINE. Another mining accident occurred yesterday at the Una Company’s mine, Karaka, by which o.io of the workmen named William Cox had liis leg breken, but foituoately sustained no other injury. Cox was at work by h'mseJf in the slopes at about midday, when, as ihe manager passed by ihe former made ihe remark that lie bad an ugly p ! ecc of rock to get out, but he supposed it would be all right or words to . hat effect. The manager then went on to another pp.it of ihe workings, and Cox proceeded on io woik at the rock with the gad, and had been so engaged for a sboit Mine on'v, when a pm .ion of Ibe ugly piece of rock he spoke oE gave way, and came down upon 1' mu . breaking his leg. The men wolfing in ihe oilier part of ihe mine as soon as ihey learned what had occurred io their comrade piocured a ladder, which was convened in a few minutes into a streicher, and upon this the sufferer was removed to ihe hospital, where the h'tnb was set and ( lie usual remedies apphed. It is. wc bear, a simple ease in a surgical point of view, and that ihe pai'ent, who is a strong, lieahby young man, will soon recover the effects of the accident, which might have been much more serious. Cox lias been wo-kreg in the mine for several months, and was, wc hear, considered by Ids employers a steady and good miner. In this case, as in that which happened the other day at Tavaru, no blame, so far as we can learn, is to be attached to anybody. It is one of those purely accidental occii'-renccs which arc incidental to ihe dangerous occupation of mining, and serves to point out the necessity of the greatest care and caution in wo-'king in stopmgs, although, as we have above mentioned, there is no reason to believe that there was any want of caution in this particular case.
