ATTACK ON A CONSTABLE.
Dunedin, Dec. 9,
Henry Shortly, a rabbiter, on Wednesday bailed up the manager, Mr Kay, on the Kuriwera station, presenting a gun at bis head, aud forced him to his knees. He then kicked him. Ray, believing the man to be insane, reported the occurrence to the police at Clinton. Constable Fascoe, accompanied by a man named Mcßorie, proceeded to the station to effect an arrest, but on reaching the hut door. Shortly presented a gun at the constable. The latter challenged, but Shortly knocked him down with the butt end of his gun, and while the constable was trying to secure him, Shi>rtly shot him in the hip. Mcßorie left the horses to go to Pascoe's assistance, but aa Shortly fired at him and also possessed the constable's revolver, Mcßorie took to his heels. Shortly made off for Clinton, leaving Pascoe in a dead faint on the floor.
On arriving at the township the lunatic, flourishing the revolver, threatened to shoot anybody who interfered. Three brothers named Coghlan tackled him on verandah of Nelson's Temperance Hotel. Maurice Coghlan, advancing uncencernedly,smoking, seized him by the arms, while his two brothers bound him hand and foot. Shortly struggled violently, making desperate efforts to use the revolver.
Pascoe's wound is a severe flesh one from the upper part of his hip to four inches below the groin. His condition is serious.
