The overseer's report was to the following effect: —The past month had been very wet. The drainß had acted freely. Little beyond ordinary surface work had been done. Work lately done in Cass street had proved useful. The bank north of this street had been carried away. In the overseer's opinion the gully leading through the lower part of the town mijht bo flooded by a similar riee of the river, unless extra work was done to the north. Ho had called tenders for asphalj and concrete work, and recommended top-dressing of present asphalting. Dyson street was much cut up, and in Godloy street some parties had been digging nearly the whole width of the street, presumably for worms, and some little damage had been done. A conversational discussion took place as to the board's power or liability in respect of river encroachment. Mr Comer was of opinion that it was only a matter of a year or two before the river would work its way into tiie gully in the we.-t of the town, and eventually reach Vine street. Several ratepayers had spo'*eu to him about it. Several members said tiiat any work done would he more for the protection of private owneiii than for the good of the town. All tha|i coqld bo done would be to protect the end of the street, and the immediate danger was to property outside the boundary, and the ilood-water would break in behind any work erected. No resolution was arrived at, and it was agreed to await further information, kckfackman's report. Tho surfaceman reported as to clearing off weeds and patching. Ho had been Flopped occasionally by wet weather.
