Cain's contract in Murray street was not completed when he visited it on Saturday last. Material from the footpaths iu the street had been removed by private indviduals in erecting fences, and he thought a claim should be made on the parties to make good the material taken. It would to be carted to fill the ditches. He wished to know if occupiers of adjoining properties, after formation of footpaths, were allowed to cut the necessary channel down to enable them to cross the f aotpaths with loaded drays. Damage was being done in places to faces of cuttings, by, he thought, children, in the shape of excavation. He drew the attention of the board to gravel reserve No. 756, the fence of which had in places been undermined and iu adaugerous state. Several notices of rates and rents had been returned through the Dead Letter Office, and other notices were not yet posted, as addresses had uof so far been ascertained. He asked for instructions re publishing balance-sheets,
Resolutions were passed on the overseer's report aa follows:
Re the ditch material removed from footpath iu Mr Cain's contract by private individuals, it was decided that no action could be taken in this particular case. Re crossings over footpaths on to sections, it was resolved that occupiers of sections be notified that crossings over water-tables and footpoths may only be erected (after application to the board) under the 07erseer's supervision. Re balance-sheets, it was resolved that the board's finances did not warrant to have them published, and on the motion of Mr Frew, seconded by Mr Russell, it was further resolved to obtain a blackboard and have ihe balance-sheet put up on same.
Re gravel reserve, it was shown that some persouswere takiug shingle from the reserve without permission, and they had encroached on to the street side.—The overseer was instructed to have the daugerous place refeuced.
ACCOUNTS. Accounts wore passed for payment, aud the meeting terminated.
GERALDINE TERMINATING BUILDING SOCIETY.
At the Oddfellows' Hall on Tuesday evening a meeting of the Geraldine Terminating Building Society was held, when the attendance wa3 fair, and the chair was taken by Mr R. H. Pearpoiut.
The chairman mentioned that the rules had been compiled by the Provisional Directors, chiefly from rules of other societies, such as the three societies at Titnaru, one at Ashburton, aud all the societies at Christchurch. From these rules the directors had struck out all ambiguities, and had made a few ad ditions considered necessary for a country district.
Mr R. Thew moved, and Dr Hidop seconded—" That only the revised rules be read to the meeting."—Carried. Mr F. Wilson Smith, the society's solicitor, explained the revisions that had been made iu the rules. One of the chief clauses that had been imported iuto them was the one allowing the society to continue in groups of GOO members. By this if it was found necessary to extend the share list at any time it could be done by forming another group of members, aud thus avoiding the expanse of forming a new society. Iu drawing up rules the provisional directors had the advantage of all the amendments made from time to time by the different societies. There was a special clause in the rules applicable to a poor man. Provision was made if a man secured an allotment, aud did not require the full amount he could take any part of it down to £SO, for which he would pay back pro rata, ai-d by giving three mouths notice at any time in the future he could get the balance of his appropriation. Mr John Pye proposed, aud Dr Hislop seconded—" That the rules as submitted by the provisional directors be adopted." —Carried unanimously. The followiug resolutions were also agreed upon :—" That for the time boiug, the chief office of tho society be the Oddfellows' Hall; that each alternate Monday be the night of payment; that December 2nd bo tho first night of payment; that the number of directors bo nine; that tho date of the annual meeting be December 2nd; that the seal of tho society bo an anchor with tho nitmo of the society round tho rim of tho seal." The oloctiou of directors by ballot resulted in the followiug boiug elected : J. Sutherland, J. Pye, J. W. Pye, R, H. Pearpoint, Dr Hislop, A, White, W. Berry, J. Boughton, W. W. Campbell.
On the motion of Mr R. Thow tho remuneration of the directors was fixed at £9 per annum, to ho divided amongst them. The rules wore tljou finally adopted for registration and tho meeting terminated.
