A man named John Idle was arrested at Auckland on a charge of entering the premises of Messrs Benjamin & (Jo., and stealing a quantity of tobacco. There was no defence, and the Judge granted a decree, nisi, petitioner to have the custody of the child. In the Bendigo County Court, Judge Choraley gave a verdict of. £SO and costs to “ Madame ” Stanley against “ Professor” Richard for libelling her. An advertisement published by Richard concerning the plaintiff led to a fracas in the street some time ago. Defendant’s counsel said that Richard was now in England. The judge described Richard’s advertisement concerning the plaintiff as grossly malicious, slanderous,audlibellous, and the whole tenor of it as most malignant. __________
