ACCIDENTS, OFFENCES, ETC.

" Mrs Burridge, a steerage passenger on the Tarawera from Lyttelton for Auckland, was found dead in her berth shortly after leaving Gisborne, from, it is supposed, heart disease. She complained of indigestion on the passage. In a bag was found a card ' Mrs E. Williams, 44, South Belt, Christchurch.'" The lady referred to in this telegram was the wife of Mr Mark Burridge, Geraldine, who is well known throughout the district. The deceased left Geraldiue about a week ago to visit her eldest daughter and son at Auckland, and >vas then apparently in the best of heaith, and before her departure was seen by many of her friends at Geraldine to be in very bright spirits in anticipation of a pleasant trip. We understand that the deceased's friends deny that she suffered from disease. The body of deceased will be brought from Auckland to be interred in the Geraldine cemetery. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved family, who are greatly respected throughout the district. Mr W. Greenwood, aged 89, builder of old St. Paul's, Auckland, is dead. He arrived in Wellington in 1840, and soon settled in Auckland. At Port Chalmers, on Tuesday, David K. Fisher was charged with neglecting to have his child vaccinated. Mr Carew, S.M., said the defendant had been previously convicted and fined. He was of opinion that a person should not be punished more than once for an offence. He was not satisfied with the reading of the section; if notice was seut every month while the child was between G months and 14 years, a person would be liable :o be fined several times. He therefore dismissed the case. Alan Sutherland, a groom with Messrs Cobb and Co. at Dunedin, died from in j uries received by his horse falling. The accident happened through a dog rushing out at the horse. Sutherland sustained concussion of the brain. Hugh McAlister, licensee of the Shamrock Hotel, Invercargill, was charged with Sunday trading. The defence was that the two men supplied were firemen on the Hiuemoa, but they had represented themselves as travellers, and on this ground the case was dismissed.—Lines, the fireman of the Hiuemoa who had been served with liquor on the representation that he was a traveller, was charged before a bench of Justices with fraudulent misrepresentation. Lines admitted that he had told the landlord that he had come from the Bluff, and honestly believed that he was entitled to refreshment, although he had arrived in town the previous night. The Bench accepted his statement aud dismissed the charge. At Invercargill, Elias "Drake, bankrupt, lately hotelkeeper, was placed on three months' probatioa for contracting a debt without having reasonable grounds of expectation that he would be able to pay it. A peculiar case occupied the attention of the Invercargill Magistrate, Mr Poynton on Tuesday. A middle-aged farmer, James Thomas VVatt, was charged with entering the premises of David Stewart and behaving in away that gave Mrs Stewart reason to fear bodily harm. The evidence showed that accused had known Mrs Stewart at Windon, where she had been a school teacher, and that, hearing of her marriage, he leased his farm and came to Invercargill, where he hangs about her residence. Though warned to cease his undesirable visits he refused to believe that Mrs Stewart was married. Watt was remanded for medical examination. At Napier Frederick Anuear and George Castle wore committed for trial for forging a cheque for £BO on the Bank of New Zealand.
