CHRISTCHURCH CITY MISSION
TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —Knowing that I have many unknown sympathisers towards my work among the poor and destitute (around Christchurch) in Temuka and district, will you, sir, favor me by publishing this earnest appeal for special help to enable me to open a " Children's Home," and will you also, if it have your approval, allow such kind frieuds who may feel disposed to help me to forward their subscriptions to you, so that they may be acknowledged through your valuable paper 1 I fear 1 have taken up too much space in requests, so ask your forgiveness in doing so. Since I have had the monthly reports of the District Nurse who devotes (on behalf of the Mission) her whole time to the nursing of the sick in destitute cases, we have seen the great necessity of a children's creche—a home where children can be sent when serious diseases are iu their homes; also for mothers who have to go to work, that they may, for a small fee, leave their children at the home. I am sure such a work appeals to all hearts, especially to Christian mothers', aud it is to them particularly I would say, " For the bairuiea' sake help me !" Such a home will act as a preventative of sickness in families; mothers (often the breadwinners) will be able to get more work, and the children will have their little bodies nourished and cared for while under our care. Trusting you will help me, I am, etc., Thomas Herrick.
[This letter has been iu our possession for some time, but got lost sight of amongst other papers. We shall be very happy to forward to Mr Herrick any subscriptions entrusted to us. We believe that Mr Herrick is doing good work amhng the poor of Christchurch, and that he will devote subsqrip.tious to the pu/poses for whijih they are subscribed.—Ed.]
