A Liberal Gift.—Of the £I2OO contributed to reduce the cathedral debt at Napier, the Rev. W. Colenso gave £IOO. Martini-Henry Rifles. - Fifty-three cases of Martini-Henry rifles came out by the Tainui from London, consigned to the Defence Department. Fancy Dress Ball.— The annual Fancy Dress Ball in connection with the Temuka Caledonian Society will be held on the 22ud August, and promises to be equally as successful as in previous years. Sale at Temuka.— At Temuka tomorrow Messrs Glasson & Co., sell the stock-in-trade and plant of Miss N. Donoghue (bankrupt). Particulars will be found in our advertising columns. Pakihi. —A grand social in aid of the school funds will be held in the Pakihi Schoolroom, on Friday evening, August 2nd. A good programme has been arranged, and with a fine night it is to be hoped that there will be a good attendance. West Coast Coal. —The attention of our readers is directed to the advertisement concerning the Coalbrookdale and Grey Valley Coals, which appears elsewhere. These coals are famous for steam producing, and for that purpose are greatly valued.

Milford. To-morrow evening, JMr J, T. M. Hayhurst will give a magic lantern entertainment in the Milford school in aid of the fund for fencing the new playground. The principal views shown will bo South Sea Island ones, which should be most interesting and instructive. We hope the school will be crowded. Magisterial. —At the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Temuka, on Tuesday, before Messrs M. Quinn and J. M. Two.cney, J.P.s, the Temuka Road Board sued William Ellery for 7s (id, overdue rates. Mr Archer appeared for the board. Judgment was given by default for amount claimed with costs, £1 Bs. In another case judgment was confessed.

Fertilisers. —Amongst the many kimls of manures now in the market the Islington Fertilisers hold a foremost position. They are practically of local manufacture, and consequently adapted to the soil of Canterbury. We direct attention to the advertisement concerning them which appears elsewhere.

Terminating Building Society for Geraldine. —IVe understand there is a movement on foot in Gerald ne to form a Terminating Building Society on the lines which have made the Titnaru Society so successful and popular. We are informed that a public meeting of those interested will shortly be called, and every effort made to give such a society a successful start at Geraldine. It is to be hoped that the enterprise will meet with the success it deserves Unemployed Fund. —We have pleasure in acknowledging the receipt of a chequ : for £5 from the Rev, J. Dickson. Of this sum .-fell has been given by the rev. gentleman out of hia own private purse, and £2 raised by the entertainment given by him. We have also to acknowledge IDs received from the Rev. Mr Standage, making in all £5 10s now remaining in hand. The sum of £J7 17 s I ll * 9 already been forwarded to tbo Charitable Aid Board, and the donations just received bring the total sum collected up to £« lUs. This with the Government subsidy added represents £l)s Ms. It will be seen that a few pounds more would bring it up to a total of XJOO. We shall be glad to acknowledge in these columns any further douations which may be forwarded to us. ' Winchester. —The monthly meeting of the Winchester School Committee was held on Monday evening. Present—Messrs W. Deßenmy (chairman), R. Smith, W. Philp, J. M. Isaughton, ,T, Collie, and J. Donnithornc. The master reported that the average attendance for the quarter ending doth June was 77, and that the pupil teaclier had passed her examination. The inspector’s report was read and considered highly satisfactory. It was decided to hold a concert and dance on August JOth, and Messrs W. Deßcnzy, R. Smith, J. M. Naughton, and J. Collie were appointed to carry it out; tickets for concert Is ad, dance Is. It was resolved to take no notice of Arbor fay. A circular was received from the Bdncation Board re dancing classes. Tim next morning she found that ho - cold had almost entirely disappeared. During the day she took a few doses of the remedy )ono tablespoonful at a lime) aud at night again took a tablespoouful before going to bed. and on the following morning awoke free from all symptoms of the cold. Since then she has on several occasions used this remedy in like manner, with the same nood results, aud is much ejated over her discovery of so quck a way of curing a cold. I.O.O.F.—The members of the Victoria Lodge, 1.0.0. F., meet on Sunday next, at 10.30 a.m. for chnrch parade to St. Mary’s Anglican Church, Geraldine. The Medical Hall.— Attention is directed to the advertisement of Mr C. B. Eichbaum, of the Medical Hall, Timaru. From this it will be seen that Mr Eichbaum is a direct importer of drugs, and that his prices are very low. Mishap. — Mr Chaffey in coming to Temuka yesterday with his engine drawing two empty trucks, got stuck in the Temuka river below the bridge, and all elforts to get out failed, as the water put the engine fire out. Mr James Walker kindly went to Mr Chaffey’s assistance an/i hauled the engine and trucks out of the river. No damage was done. Benefit Concert. —On Sunday afternoon next the Temuka Brass Band give a sacred concert in the Victoria Park, in aid of their conductor, Mr David Bryan, who has been unable to work since Easter. For many years Mr Bryan has given his services to the band, and it is not too much to say that it is owing to his exertions and enthusiasm that it has reached its present pitch of excellence, or, in fact, that it is in existence ct all. A collection will be taken up in aid of Mr Bryan, and we hope it will be a liberal one.

The Dresden Piano Company.— We direct attention to the advertisement which appears elsewhere The Company is holding what is very unusual, a cheap sale of pianos, and advertise that no reasonable offer will be refused. We have reason to believe that the advertisement means what it says, that great bargians in pianos can now be had by applying at Messrs P. W. Hutton & Co., booksellers, Timaru, where the Dresden Company keep their stock of pianos. Music will be obtained very cheap curing the sale, and the genial Dunedin manager, Mr J. A. X. lleidle, will be in attendance during the sale. A Fatal Fire.— The Empire Hotel at Palmerston North was burned down between 1 and2 a.m. onMonday. Mostof the inmates had narrow escapes, and two men were burned to death in attempting to escape. One was named Devency, a hawker, recently from Victoria, aged 31. The other was an old man named Maurice Connell. The origin of the fire is unknown. The bodies when recovered were unrecognisable. A few minutes after a second lire broke out in the Square, destroying the shops of Hardy, fruiterer (where it originate 1), ITaydon, grocer, the offices of Gay & Hag eit solicitors, and the drainage board engineers. Very little was saved. Te Aro House was saved with difficulty by the exertions of the brigade. The insurances were ,£O3O in the London and Lancashire, £550 in Imperial, £I3OO in the Commercial Union, £l5O in the National, £IOO in the Alliance, and £l5O in the New Zealand. Good Templaky. The usual weekly meeting of the Good Hope Lodge, No. 42, Temuka, was held on Tuesday evening, when there was a good attendance. Bro. Wakely, C.T., presided, and opened the lodge in usual manner. After the minutes of the previous meeting had been read and confirmed, Bro. Philp read several communications he had received from the Grand Lodge, and a notice that a meeting of the South Canterbury District Lodge would be held in Timaru on Friday next. Officers for the ensuing quarter were elected. A recess was then granted for refreshments, after which Bro. Wakely presented Bro. Russell with a handsome watch-guard and pendant, mounted with gold, and in a few words spoke of the good qualities of Bro. Russell as a member of the lodge. Bro. Russell, in accepting the gift, said ho did not know what he had done to receive such a handsome gift from the lodge, as he considered he had only done his duty as a member, which he considered all members ought to do. After again thanking the members he sat down amidst applause, Bros. Grant, Barr, and Cain also spoke of Bro. Russell’s good work during his term of office in the lodge, and expressed regret at his departure from the district. The lodge was then closed in the usual form by the C.T, Aubor Day. —At a meeting of the Arbor Day Committee the were present:—The Rev. A, B. Todd (in the chair), A. White, T. Sherratt, M. Coombs, J. M, Sutherland, John Pye, J. W. Pye, J. Boughton, and J. J. McCaskey (Secretary). Collectors’ books were handed in, chow ing the amount of £5 9s collected for Arbor Day celebration, £1 of which was collected by Mr T. Sherratt specially for a treat for tne children. A committee was appointed to arrange about a suitable site for treeplanting, and to select trees. The Secretary was instructed to write to Mr Farnie re a donation of trees from the children, also to the school committee, requesting a half-holiday for the children on Arbor Day. The chairman of the town board agreed to request the business people to close their shops at noon on that day, and it was decided that the procession start from Huffey’s corner at 1 p.m., and that representatives from each of the clubs address the meeting. It was decided that in case the day selected should turn out wet the celebration be postponed till the following Thursday. Mrs Emily Thorne, who resides at Toledo, Washington, says she has never been able to procure any medicine for rheumatism that relieves the pain so quickly and effectually as Chamberlain’s Pain Balm, and that she has also used it for lame back with great success.
