HILTON.
[From Our own Correspondent ] The debating society held its weekly meeting last Tuesday, and a vigorous debate amongst the thirty present took place on “ Smoking. ” Mr Burn led the opponents and Mr Bradley the friends of smoking, and after great discussion, in which all took part, the smokers defeated the non-smokers by two votes. The night this week is to be occupied by essay-reading and other contributions by the members. On Fnday evening one of the most successful and enjoyable gatherings that has been hold for a long time was carried through by the bachelors of Hilton, who had invited their friends to the number of about 80 to a dance. The floor was good, the refreshments were well looked after (some of the ladies helping to dispense them), and the music (piano and accordeon) was capital. The dance began at 8 o’clock, and not till five next morning did some of the untiring ones halt. The bachelors are to be heartily 1 hanked and congratulated ou the very pleasant evening’s entertainment they provided. The football match against Hazelburn, which should have come oil’ on Saturday ieil through owing to the Hilton team being unable to get a conveyance. Later on, however, they intend to go, for they are all very disappointed over the failure to keep their engagement. The Upper Waitohi team is expected over next Saturday. It is reported to ho very heavy, and our boys are anxiously waiting to see if report speaks truly. .Sunday and Monday have been very cold hero. The hills are all covered with snow, and J hear (loraldino has a thick coating, but hero and up at Kakahu Bush there waa only a sprinkle, which disappeared before midday on Monday. The school committee held its monthly meeting on Monday evening. I’rosunt Messrs It- Hkii.ner (chairman), J. Leary, (irillilhs, Beattie, and Bradley. Correspondence wan read from the education Board re repairs, and the chairman and Mr Beattie wore appointed to attend to the matter. The chairman reported that
he had received rents amounting to 20s for socials, etc., held in the school; that the head master reported the average attendance to be 57 roll number 66, a good many children having been absent owing to colds. Accounts amounting to £5 Is wore passed for payment. The committee’s sanction was given to the head master’s proposal to get up a social about the end of August to raise a fund for expenses in connection with the drill, gymnastic, and athletic training of the boys and girls.
