THE GOVERNORSHIP OF NEW SOUTH WALES.
Sydney, May 29. The Premier has cabled to the AgentGeneral to inform the Marquis of Ripou that the Governorship is too important a post to justify protracted delay, and added that if no one in the Mother Country is eligible or willing to occupy the position we are quite prepared to make a suitable election from amongst our own people. May 30, In the Assembly, Sir G. R. Dibba said the Premier’s cable about the Governorship was too contemptible and idiotic to be noticed. Ha did not understand the relative positions of England and the colonies. In the House this afternoon Sir Henry Farkes moved the adjournment in order to call attention to the cable sent Home by Mr Reid with regard to the Governorship. The message, Sir H. Parkes said, would cause the colony to become a laughing stock at Home. A hot debate ensued, the Premier coming in for some warm criticisms from his opponents. London, May 30. The coarse tone of Mr Reid’s message with reference to the Governorship of New South Wales has surprised the Colonial Office. Sir Saul Samuel, AgentGeneral, is awaiting the Marquis of Ripon’s reply to the message. It is believed that the Marquis of Ripon will not appoint a Governor for New South Wales pending the assurance that the salary will not be touched. The colonists generally condemn the tone of Mr Reid’s telegram.
