THE NEW DIPHTHERIA CURE.

Dr Erson, who was in charge of the diphtheria case successfully treated at Auckland with anti-toxin, states that^the attack was of a very virulent character, the membrane covering the whole back of the throat, also the nasal passage. The lymphatic glands all round the throat to the back of the neck were not only inflamed, but the patient was also suffer - ing from albuminuria. A dose of Behring's anti-toxin was injected, followed by a second within six hourß. After twelve hours there was no e fleet at all to be noticed upon the membrane, nor was there any physical reaction the same aa in tuberculiue. The firat constitutional effoct noticed was the subsidence, within 12 hours, of all the inflammation of the lymphatics, followed iu anothor twelve hours by the shedding of the membrane from the various portions where it wan secreted. A third injection was given to the patient, who is now ou a far road to recovery. There is no doubt in 13r Erson's mind that, if the lifo has not been saved by its instrumentality, certainly the effects following the injection showed it to be roally an anti-toxin—that is, it destroyed tho germ of the disease in the system. I hat is conclusively proyod by the fact that the injection did not attack the membrane itself, butall'ected tho germ in the system, which was followed by tho shedding of tho membrane from tho throat.—N.
