AUSTRALIAN CABLE.

Sydnbt, April 17. The ship Largiemore, from Kio de Janeiro, when in low latitude was for five days completely hemmed in by au immense collection of icebergs, estimated to be 800 miles in length. She collided with one berg and received considerable damage to her bow. The position of the vessel was so serious that the boats were provisioned in readiness to leave her. April 18.

News from New Guinea records the fact that a tidal wave swept many houses away and drowned one child iu the native village. There is much consternation among the natives owing to severe earthquake shocks being experienced. The warship Bingarooma was to have sailed for Aucklaud to-day, but her departure is indefinitely postponed owing to au alleged serious difficulty having arisen between two important officers. A court of enquiry was held immediately, but the nature of the proceedings have not leaked out. The decision will probably be referred first to the Admiral, who is now at Adelaide.

Just as everything was ready for a balloon ascent at Gympie, the balloon caught fire and shot into the air, carrying with it Miss Essie Viola and her parachute. Miss Viola was unable to detach her parachute, as the ropes were entaDgled. After travelling some distance the balloon began to fall and the paracute opened and would not work.
