WINCHESTER.

The annual business meeting of the members of St. John's Church, Winchester, was held in the Sunday School Hall on Tuesday evening last. The Rev. Thomas Farley occupied the chair, and there was a very good attendance, the large room being comfortably filled. The chairman expressed his pleasure iu being present, and hoped the present friendly relations between pastor and people might long continue. The treasurer, Mr Inwood, read the report and balance-sheet. The receipts amounted to £7l 15s 6d, and the exexpenditure to £69 18s id, leaving a credit balance of £1 17s 3d The report and balance-sheet were adopted as read. The following gentlemen were then elected to act as a vestry for the current year: Minister's churchwardeu, Mr Id wood; people's churchwarden, Mr H. E. Smith ; vestrymen, Messrs Wm. Deßenzy, W. Philp, T. Hart, R, S. Smith, J. Donnithorne, J. A. Young, H. J. Gladstone, and F. Shallard. Hearty votes of thanks were passed to the superintendent and teachers of the Suaday school, the lay-reader, and the organist. Mr Inwood responded, and gave all lovers of music a cordial invitation to join the church choir. Refreshments of the most inviting description were then handed round, and heartily enjoyed by old and young. The delicious tea seemed to put everyone in good spirits for the second part of the j programme, viz., the gift auction to raise ] funds to complete the purchase-money of ] the orgau. This instrument, which was j purchased some time ago from from Mr j iiayhurst, of Temuka, was described by ] the organist as by far the finest American ] organ between Timaru and Christchurch. ) Mr H. B. Webster, of Geraldine, kindly ] came down and sold a quantity of pro- j duce at very satisfactory prices. The ] bidding was very spirited, and every j article, dead and alive, found a ready I purchaser. j The proceeds amounted to over £l4,j which leaves the organ almost free of ] debt.
