TEMUKA V. ASHBURTON,

These teams played their final mateh at Temuka on Thursday. Owing to Hawkes and Low with the ball, and Brown and Gillespie with the bat, the local team wiped out their previous defeat at the hands of the northerns. The wicket was very fast, and a bit bumpy at one end. Dann won the toss, and sent his team into the field. The wicket was very fast, as the bowling was a ’ for some time, Donsbi’ v » -- " loose indulging 4 - * ... <*ud Davis both

*’ Heavy slogging. But witli advent of Hawkes at the bowling crease a change came over the scene, as ho secured 4 wickets for 1 run. The innings closed for 71 runs for 8 wickets, as the visiting team only brought down nine men. The local men. fielded up well, taking what chances were given, hiolwell and McLean making good catches, and Low a brilliant one with his left hand from a hard drive. Brown and Dann were the first to bat for Temuka, the latter player getting a smash on his hand first ball, and being bowled off his ieft toe by the second. Volvin followed, Old did good service by staying in a long time and helping to tire the bowlers, who were sending down some splendid balls j there wore only 7 runs scored when ho loft, as Brown had not opened his account. C’utteu followed, bnt did not stay long. Low, next man, helped Brown to run up the score, which had reached 2G runs when his wicket fell Ferguson, next man, and Brown pleased r.ho spectators by making several very smart runs, and ho loft with the score at 30 for r> wickets. Gillespie, the sturdy left-hander, who succeeded, soon got to work, and quickly caught up to Brown on the score shoot. The veteran then became aggressive, and hit out well at all the bowlers put on, and was finally dismissed juat on call of time for 33 runs made by good cricket, his partner, Gillespie, having an equal number to his credit, not out. E. Andrews bowled well for Ashburton, Davis, the crack

northern bowler, not coming off so well, no doubt the wicket not suiting him so well as a softer one would. The fielding was good, Burton and Denshire being about best in that department. Not the least pleasing part of the afternoon’s performance was the adjournment made to partake of the cup of afternoon tea and choice viands thoughtfully provided by Mesdames Luxford and Herbert, who received the assistance of several young ladies in attending to the wants of the teams and visitors present. Needless to remark their efforts were duly appreciated. Messrs T. Brosnahan and Fanthorpe acted as umpires, and gave every satisfaction. The Ashburton men fielded with a full team, two of their opponents doiug duty for them. Scores:—
