S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held on Thursday. Present—The Rev. G. Barclay, the Rev. J. White, Messrs Melville Gray, John Talbot and W. B. Howell. Messrs Goldsmith, Pearpoint and Jackson sent apologies.
On the motion of Mr flolwell, the Rev. Mr Barclay was elected to preside. The secretary, in the absence of the chairman, reported that Mr Alex. Bell, of Seadown, wished to be relieved by the 25th March, in order to attend Canterbury College this session, and hopes that after he has completed his college course he will be able to again enter the services of this board. An application had been withdrawn for Pakihi as soon as the applicant learnt that he was not considered sufficiently capable for the post.
inspector’s report.
The inspector’s reports on Waimate, Ternuka, Geraldine, and one or two other schools were read. Brief comment having been made on one or two, they were directed to be sent on to the respective committees.
BUILDINGS.
The architect’s reports were read.
The tenders were as follows :
Kapua School—Watt £llO 3s, Philp £llO, Gaitt £lls 10s, Black £95 (accepted).
Master’s house at Hannaton—Watt £159, Fhilp £162, Black £169 (accepted by lot), Tooth £278, Waterhouse & Cameron £l7B 10a.
Additions at Hannaton—Watt £69 2s, Philp £67, Gaitt £79 lls, Black £6O, Waterhouse & Cameron £63, Targuse £6O (accepted by lot).
Tenders had also been called for a residence at Bangitata, but on the motion of Messrs Talbot and Gray it was resolved “ That the consideration of the acceptance of a tender for the erection of a master’s house be postponed until the next meeting of the board, and that in the meantime the Rev. Mr White be asked to visit the district and report as to the requirements of a bouse there.”
CORRESPONDENCE.
Letters were read from Eapua, Orari Gorge, and Pareora Village Settlement, respecting elections of school committees, and of Messrs A. Watt, T. Thatcher, and W. A. Boutcher being elected the respective chairmen. The Fakihi School Committee wrote, recommending Mr A. E. Jones as sole teacher, and, on the motion of Mr Howell, the recommendation was accepted. The Hilton School Committee wrote, r£commending Mr E. H. Burn ss head master, and, on the motion of Mr Talbot, the recommendation was agreed to. The Waimate High School Board wrote declining the suggestion of the Board of Education that they should increase the amount of their contribution in aid of the teaching staff of the Waimate District High School. —On the motion of Mr Taloot, consideration of this matter, owing to the small attendance of members, was held over. Mr Goldsmith was re-elected a member of the High School Board.
THE CATHOLIC SCHOOLS,
At the last meeting the board had a request before them to allow their inspector to inspect the Catholic schools in this district. The board then decided that certain information should be asked for regarding number of schools and pupils. The Rev. Father Hurlin now forwarded the information that there were five schools and 585 pupils. The Rev. George Barclay gave notice of the following motion for next meeting: Catholic authorities re inspection of their schools be granted, subject to any conditions now or hereafter to be considered by the board.”
THE SCHOLARSHIP REPORT
The scholarship committee the Rev. G. Barclay, the Rev. J. White, and Mr M. Gray were to table their report before lunch, but, as it was not quite complete, were given till the afternoon to do. Their report was as follows :—“ The scholarship fund consists of £326 9s 6d, held by scholars of last year £96, sum available at present for distribution £230 9s 6d. The above balance we propose to allocate as follows ; Seniors : Bertie Stone, £4, plus free education at the Timaru High School; Emma Cooper, £4:, plus free education at the Timaru High School; H, McKibbin, £34, education at the Timaru High School; Jessie Strachau, £4, phis free educvtion at the Timaru High School; Robert Clarke, £24, education at the Timaru High School (partial scholarship,provisional). Junior: John McDonald, W. Moody, Donald Mayor, Edith Hassell, Jennie Stachmaun, Anthony Shrimpton, £4 each, with free education at the Timaru High School; Lily Stewart, Bella Jones, Lizzie Ritchie, and W, H. Walton, each £34, with free education at the Timaru High School. In addition to those to whom sums of monoy have been assigned, others on the list receivable for free tuition by the Timarn High School Board are Agnes Lyle, Mabel Ray, Martin O’Brien, H. 0. Tennant, and Hugh J. Mayo.” In addition to presenting this report the chairman also gave lengthy extracts from the examiners’ reports. At the close Mr Talbot moved, Mr Howell seconded, and it was carried unanimously—“ That the report of the scholarship committee uo approved and adopted, and the thanks of the board be accorded to the examiners.” The meeting then terminated.
