LABOUR, ETC.
Sydney, Feb. 5. A majority of the Newcastle miners' lodges are unable to pay the increased strike levy of 10 per cent. It is stated that the strike fund is now so low that it will be insufficient to meet the next instalment of pay. There are evident signs of disintegration amongst the members of the miners' associations. A conference of unionists and non-unionists is being arranged, at which a proposal will be made to admit the latter to the union at reduced rates. New rules have been approved for the New South Wales Government labour settlements, which provide for /the appointment of a superintendent who will have full executive powers iu regard to organisation and management, with the advice of a board of control Settlers are from time to time to Belect a resident committee of five from among themselves whose duties will be to make recommendations through the superintendent respecting matters touching the welfare of the settlers and the conduct of the settlement.
The Bruce County Council decided to reduce the wages of surfacemen to 5s Gd per day.
