London, January 6. Prices for frozen meat are likely to keep up, owing to shortness of supplies from the Argentine Republic. Nelson Bros, quote good Australian crossbreds, 3£d. The Victorian poultry has created a favourable impression on the market. Its quality is almost perfect, aud the outlook for the trade in this line is promising. It is suggested that poultry should be frozen prior to packing, and that packing in a divided crate without cardboard boxes would effect savings in freight. Importors expect good prices if poultry maintains the quality of 1894 shipments. Shipments should be timed to arrive in February, March, and April, the best market being I obtainable in March. French beans from Madeira are selling wholesale in London for 6d. Tallow, medium mutton, 233 ; beef, 225. The English wheat market shows a strong tone, but prices are unchanged. The Continental is firm, and the American inclined to buoyancy. The liquidators' report on the Laud Company of Australasia, states that nearly all the psets in the company were mortgaged at the date of the resolution to wind up. In the opinion of the liquidators,*the uncalled capital, in addition to the proceeds of the free assets, will not be sufficient to meet the liabilities. Until the result of a call in England and attendant oxpeusui* i» known, it will be impossible to say whether there will be any surplus for the unsecured creditors. The principal cause of the downfall of the company was overtrading. If the company had confiued its attention to buying properties and paying fpr them right out there would have been no reason why th,e creditors and the company should have lost more than interest on their money. Flagrant instances of mismanagement were revealed in the course of the liquidators' researches over the Vielbouriie properties. The company lost in one instance £BSOO through a speculation by one director in mining properties. Jau. 8, Wheat has risen Gd per quarter. The imports into the United Kingdom during the past year show a decrease of £3,678,000. Exports increased by £231,000. Cold weather is causing briskness iii the butter trade, but prices have not improved owing to heavy Victorian arrivals. Quotations are I)is t> 100 s, and for choicest brands 102 s to 101 s. Pari-!, Jan. 8. The firm of Ponsart, Galliot it Llei'ns, who are extensive purchasers in the London wool market, have failed. '1 ho liabilities are £BO,OOO and assets £05,000. Galliet committed suicide. Mblbouknb, January 8. The first shipment of cheese under the now bonus regulation will bo sent away during tho week. It consists of G 8 tons, which have been graded by the experts of the Agricultural Department. Tho bonus to be paid is £'i per ton, provided it eells at not le=s than 50s per cwf. It is anticipated that regular shipments will be made during tho next three months. The Agricultural Dop rtinent is taking measures to prove the adaptability of tho climate to-grow kapok, tho material u;od j in upholstery. j
