Mr Berg, of Ashby, Berg & Co., Christchurch, was drowned while bathing at Sumner yesterday morning. Mr W. H. Allwright, 50, postmaster at Lyttelton until about two years ago, when he retired on a pension, committed suicide at Christchurch on Sunday evening, while his wife and daughter were at church, by cutting his throat with a table knife. N o cause is known for the act. The deceased was a brother of the late Mr H. Allwright, formerly M.H.R. for Lyttelton. Patrick Garrick, who was employed at the co-operative works, Woodville, was drowned while fording the Mauawatu river on horseback. An old miner named Thomas Millikin committed suicide at Dungauville by blowing his brains out. At Auckland Joseph Buchanan, charged with tbe abduction of a girl under 16, was remanded. Bail was allowed in £SO and two sureties of a like amount. At Christchurch at the adjourned inquert on the body of Mrs Selina Russell, found in the Avon river on Thursday morning, the jury returned a verdict that deceased died from syncope of the heart, and added a rider to the effect that there is urgent necessity for a public morgue for the reception of such cases. James Harvey, a farmer, belonging to Stirling, Otago, died suddenly of heart disease. The body of a man was found on the road between Lyttelton and Christchurch on Sunday morning. It is considered to be that of a workman named William Robertson, who arrived at Lyttelton on Saturday night by the steamer Queen of the South. Deceased was last seen alive at 6 a.m. on Sunday, when ho left the boarding house where he stayed the night with the intention of going to Christchurch. A small strap was twisted tightly around the neck, and the police consider that he has committed suicide. He appears to be about 38 years of age, and stands 5 feet 10 inches.
