CHESS.
The animal congress °f the Chess Association began at Wellington on Boxing Day. Mr Benbow occupied the chair. The following entries were received for the tournament; —Hookham, Canterbury; Edwards, Otago; Barraud, Mackay, Barnes, and Wood, Wellington ; Pearce, Manaia; Pleasants, Colton, and Hatherby, Wanganui; and Gifford, Raugitikei. It was resolved to adopt the ■Sonueborn system of scoring throughout. It was announced that the prizes for Competition would be as follows : —First, £2(J; secund, j tfiird ? £o; also special prizes of £2 2s for the most brilliantly played game, £2 2s for the player, not himself a prize-winner, who makes the best score against the three first-prize takers, and I.os 6d for the player who makes the best score against the first four. The following are the scores up to Thursday
