WINCHESTER HALL

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —The evening of the last day of the old year saw a crowded room at the Winchester Public Hall, a larger number than was anticipated availing themselves of the opportunity afforded them of spending a few hours iu social intercourse and dancing, perhaps opening the Hall for a dance and social served two purposes. First, it secured a decent acquisition to the Hall funds; aud secondly, it may have b3eu the means of keeping the larrikin spirit from coming to the suaface and shoeing its effects the following morning iu the shape of out-houses overturned, and gates hoisted off their hinges, etc. With regard to the funds, a balancesheet 1o date was submitted, showing a credit balance of over £lO, the ilnaucial po-ition being better now than ever since the Hall was built, thanks to those who take a kindly interest iu the community's interests, aud there are a considerable number who do so. Of course, like all other places, tfyare are some who are quite indifferent. There js still one hundred pounds debt on the property, and it rests with the people of the place and distrjpt whether the ball is retained or not for pnblic convenience; a liule exertion for a year or two, and it could be wiped off. Th-3 trustees kindly thank all those ladies who so generously supplied the refreshments, also Messrs T. L. Hart, and the Barrett Bros ; the former acted as &£.(.-. in his able minner, the latter supplying the music- Mr Geo Barratt deserves special njention ? tor cu a number of occasious he has shown hisg'ool'feeliug towards iu" olaco ge»°rously coining forward and giving a ty&DWg band.and voice for the benefit of the Hall.—. am. etc. j Winchester.
