Caledonian Sports. —On Wednesday next (Boxing Day) the annual sports gathering of the Temuka Caledonian Society take place, and, judging by the list of entries for the handicaps and the interest evinced in them, they will be quite as popular and successful as in former years. This year the entertainment following the sports will be given by a Christchurch company, and, judging from the reports we have heard, of. their abilities, it will be quite up to the usual standard of excellence. Tickets of the entertainment and programmes of the sports are selling well. Christmas Publications. —We have always looked upon our two weekly contemporaries as wonderful literary productions, considering the population of this colony. They are, in point of fact, equal, if not superior, to weekly papers published in any part of the globe, and are a credit to New Zealand. There is one of them which we despise politically, but from a journalistic .point of view we must regard it as a splendid production. We refer, of course, -tio the Weekly Press, which is splendidly got up, ably edited, and in every way worthy of the cathedral city. Its Christmas number is now before us, and contains, besides the usual quantity of general information, a splendid assortment of photographic views of New Zealand's most interesting scenery. Starting from the .Christchurch Railway Station, the journey to the West Cost over the Otira Gorge is graphically described and beautifully illustrated, and, besides this, several views of various parts of the world are given, as Well r as photos, of South Canterbury belles. The paper is a splendid sixpence Worth! The Canterbury Times maintains its traditional supremacy as one of the best, if'not the best, in the Australian colonies. It has put on a picturesque Christmas robe of great beauty and interest on. Its front cover is a splendid picture of Mitre Peak, Milford Sound, and the back cover is ornamented with a picture of the office of the Lyttelton Times, first number of the Lyttelton Times, published on January 11,1851, and on November 22, 1891, the Canterbury Times of the same date, and Star of the day previous. Inside this cover is a splendid paper, containing several illustrations of places of interest, besides a photo, of the members of the New Zealand Press Association, who met at a conference in Wellington on the 31st of last October. There is, besides, an extraordinary amount of excellent reading in it, and, taken all round, it is a publication of which New Zealand may justly feel proud. Now is the time to buy that piano you've promised so long. It will cost you about 9d a day at Begg & Co.'s, next Theatre, Timaru. SYNOPSIS OP ADVERTISEMENTS. Church of England—Services to-morrow.
