SUDDEN DEATH OF A PREMIER.

London, Dec. 12. Sir J. S. D. Thompson, Premier of Canada who was expected to resign, died suddenly at Windsor Castle immediately after he had been sworn in as a Privy Councillor. He was suddenly seized with illness while at luncheon at Windsor Castle. Brandy was administered and the stimulant caused him to revive, but the improvement was only temporary for he soon afterwards fell back and expired. Medical men certified that Sir J. S. D. Thompson’s death was the result of syncope, and that no inquest is necessary. The Queen was greatly grieved on bearing of his sad death. Dec. 14. The remains of the late Sir J. S. D. Thompson,- Premier of Canada, on being conveyed from Windsor Castle to the railway station en route to Canada were accorded a semi-State funeral. The Queen sent a splendid laurel wreath, to which was attached an autograph (card expressing her sorrow at the death of the esteemed statesman. The body will be taken to Canada on board a British warship. Deceased will be buried at Halifax, and will be accorded a State funeral. Ottawa, Dec, 13. The news of Sir J. S. D. Thompson’s death caused a profound sensatioiythroughout Canada. It is expected 'that Mr McKenzie Bowell, Minister of Trade and Commerce, will be summoned by the Go-vernor-General to take charge of the Government. Dec. 14. A national subscription is being raised for the family of the late Sir J. S. D. Thompson. Mr McKenzie Bowell has been summoned to take charge of the Govern* meut. *
