TIMARD WOOL SALES.
Owing to the large quantity of wool offered on Tuesday, some 1925 lots, the sale was postponed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., to enable buyers to thoroughly examine and value the various lots. The quantity of wool offered, 7028 bales, was 97 more than the combined totals of the first and second sales last year. This large increase may be accounted for by the absence this year of the usual private buying; by the increased quantity of wool growers; and by the favourable weather experienced foV shearing, as compared with the past season. On the whole the clip was equal to that of last season, being light and well grown. Before the sale commenced it was known that prices would be quite Id to IJd below the rates ruling at the first sale last year, and that the brokers had a difficult task in making growers realise the situation, and accept the inevitable, may be gathered from the heavy withdrawals, which amounted to quite one-half of the catalogues submitted. Immediately the sale commenced it was seen that the drop was rather more than was anticipated, and the absence of the usual animated bidding was very apparent, in fact, the sale may be described as sluggish throughout, and was extremely disappointing to both sellers and buyers. Fifteen buyers, eight local and seven outsiders, operated, while the number of wool growers present was unusually large, and gloomy faces werfi quite the order of the day, as farmers came understand that the drop in prices meant quite £2 to f 2 10s per bale. The ruling prices for the day, compared with last year’s opening rates, were as follow : 1894. ’1893. Halfbreds ... fid to 7jd 7d to 9d Three-quarter-breds ... 5d to 7d fijd to Bjd Crossbreds ... 5d to7d fid to B^d Merino ... 4d to 5d 5d to fifd Pieces ... 2d to 5Jd 4d to 6|d Locks... ••• lid to 3jd lid to 3|d A considerable quantity of the wools withdrawn will be shipped, and the remainder held over for next sale.
