AROWHENUA TOWN BOARD.
The monthly meeting of the Arowhenua Town Board was held in the board’s office last evening. Present—Messrs J. Ashwell (chairman), E. Carr, A. Frew, E. Brown, and A. Bussell. INTERVIEW. Mr T. Burke interviewed the board on the subject of a reserve in his occupation. He also had a portion of a road included, and had the whole planted. There had. been some conversation to the effect that this would be opened. It would be a . hardship under the existing circumstances to have the road opened. Threats had been made to knock the fence down, and he wished to know his position. The board informed Mr Burke that anyone encroaching on the land in his occupation would do so at their own risk, and if anyone should do any damage Mr Burke to have the same valued, and submit it to the board, when they would see what could be done. CORRESPONDENCE. Correspondence was read and dealt with as follows :■— From Mr J. Epps, stating that he had enclosed postal notes for 1893-94 rate, but had received no receipt, and requesting the board’s' enquiry into the matter. The clerk explained that Mr Epps had not been credited on roll or books.—The clerk to communicate with Mr Epps. From the Timarn Herald, begging for advertisements for tenders for forming Bayner Street.—-Bead. From the Timarn Harbour Board, covering petition to Government re proposed reduction in freight on frozen meat, to be signed by members and returued.-~Attended to. Frcm Mr A. P. O’Callaghan, in answer to enquiry of 30th Nov., stating that no leases of reserves had been left with him, and recommending enquiry in Christchurch. —Already attended to, and no answer had yet been received. From Mr H* Lee, pro Mrs Catherine Lee, requesting board to form Hayhurst street, with footpath on same, north from High street j also footpath on High street between Hayhurst and Hombrook street; •'so asking permission to put down pipes to carry water from bis pump to water-table. On the motion of Mr Brown, seconded by Mr Bessel}, if was resolved to form road in Hayhurst street and footpath in High street. Permission to lay pipes granted. From Mr G. McS. Gentleman, re lowering footpath in Wilkin street, op{toaite sections 443 and 444, to permanent evels.— It was resolved to include the work in contract for formation of Hayhurst streef and formation of footpath in High street. N<)TICB BOARDS. Some discussion was gone into over the matter of the notice boards. They were continually being broken, and pulled up. and thrown into the creek. It was resolved to give a reward of £1 to anyone giving information which will lead to the conviction of the guilty persons. overseer’s report. The overseer’s report was to the effect that he, in company with Mr Carr, Inspected the sites of required fords in the vicinity of Messrs Douglas’s and Webb’s, on John and Alexander streets, and considered that it was a desirable and necessary work, but, instead of the two, he should recommend that a third, also on John street, and not many chains from the previously-mentioned one, should be included in same contract, as he thought it would be more economical in the end. It could be satisfactorily done at not a great cost, and the material removed could be utilised to advantage. He had no other work under weigh, except painting and other improvements to office premises, which work is not yet completed. Be repairs to premises, it was resolved to varnish the inside of the office, and make the back door a fixture, as it could be done cheaper now that the other work was being done ; the overseer to be empowered to make the most satisfactory Arrangements. It was also resolved to renew the sign board. LAMPS. It was resolved to call the lamp-lighters’ Attention to the manner in which the lamps were being attended to. TENDERS. Tenders were opened and dealt with as follows: Contract, formation, etc., Hayhurst and High streets —P. O’Mara, 10s per chain; W. Hopkinsou, formation 9s per chain, cutting 16s; J. Cain, 7s per chain (accepted). FORDS OR BRIDGfS. Mr Carr, moved, in accordance with notice of motion—“ That tenders be called for the formation of three fords.” He explained that in the event of the tenders not being satisfactory, he would not press the matter. Mr Frew seconded the motion. After some discussion, Mr Carr amended his motion to alternate tenders for forming fords or erecting three bridges sufficiently strong enough to carry traction engines, which was carried. Tenders to be called for next board day. ACCOUNTS. Accounts amounting to £9 14s fid were . passed for payment. The bpafd sen fpge. At Dunedin a woman named Lintern wife of a gunner at the central battery dissolved sixteen match heads this evening and drank the solution. She was Bpee<|ily attended to, and is now believed . to be out of dauber.
