S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The monthly meeting of the South Canterbury Board of Education was held on Thursday. Present—Mr S. W. Goldsmith (chairman), Revs. G. Barclay and J. White, Messrs Gray, Howell, Talbot, Jackson and Pearpoint. chairman’s statement. The chairman stated that during the month Mr Jas. Colbert, of Geraldine school, had resigned to go to Haka Valley, vice Mr Mclntyre gone to Upper Waitohi, and of Mr A. Campbell of Hiltor. Temporary arrangements had been made to fill Mr Colbert’s place. The Moane committee asked for a pupil teacher on the ground that there will be 40 children at school after Christmas. The average for the past two quarters, however, did not entitle the school to a pupil teacher. THE BUIIiDINQ GRANT. A memorandum from the Government stated that the amount granted for buildings to this board was £1750. Mr J. S. Turnbull reported on the repairs needed at the Woodbury school at £2O over and above £l6 alreaby spent. Mr Barclay brought up the report of the committee on the allocation of the building grant. The committee met twice and gave a good deal of consideration to the various demands for expenditure. Mr Barclay explained each item at some length. The recommendations of the committee were as follow in order of urgency :—New building—Residence at Hannaton, schools at Pareora, and Kapua village settlements. Additions to school* rooms at Adair, Arundel, Hannaton and re-erection of school at Orari Gorge. Repairs at Pleasant Point, Wai-iti, Upper Waitohi, Woodbury, Temuka, Milford, Timaru, Lower Otaio, Raugitata Island. Fencing at Redcliff, Waimate, Winchester, aud Scotsburn. Total for foregoing, £IOBO. The committee proposed to reserve £l5O for painting schools which needed it most. £IOO was allowed for architect's fees, and £75 for school furniture. Then there was a request from the Timaru committee for a residence for a janitor at the aide school; the committee only mentioned this and made no recommendation for or against it. A sum of £250 was allotted to the reduction of the debt to the maintenance fund, and this brought the total to £IBOS. After a good deal of discussion it was resolved on the motion of Messrs Talbot and Pearpoint—“ That the report of the building committee be adopted subject to further consideration being given to the proposals for erecting teachers’ residences a-d caretaker’s house at Timaru, before they are gone on with, seeing the position of thh board’s finances, iq relation to the building grant.” committees’ correspondence. Timaru asked for the appointment of a truant officer.—Revs. Barclay and White aud Mr Howell to consider the Act aud report to the board at next meeting. Upper Otaio reported failure to elect a committee.—Another opportunity to be given.
■ Geraldine asked for an increased salary for the third teacher, so as to attract a better class of applicants.—The scale cannot be departed from. Mr Bearpoint described some exceptional circumstances in the condition of the Geraldine school, but the board supposed these would wear off in a month or two. St. Andrews supported the request of Mr Cooke, headmaster, for four months’ leave of. absence, to enable bim to visit the Old Country for family and business reasons, after 14 years’ service.—Leave granted. Mr S. Wolf asked that his music classes for pupil teachers be “ authorised ” by the board, to enable country pupil teachers to obtain a concession in railway fares.—The papers on the subject to be laid beforejjthe scholarship committee, and the authorisation given if they recommend it. The resolutions passed by the school committees’ conference were read and M received,” as no action could be taken on any of them. SCHOOL EXAMINATIONS. Reports on the examination of a numberof schools were received from the inspector. WAIMATB HIGH SCHOOL. Mr Talbot gave notice to move —“That the Waimate High School Board of Governors be asked to increase the amount of their contribution in aid of the teaching of the Waimate District High School • to an amount equal to the extra cost involved in maintaining this school as a district high school over and above that of a primary one of a similar status as to || attendance.” M THE ABCHITECT. r Mr D. West sent in his resignation as ■ architect, which was accepted, and the board went into committee to consider applications for. the post. The result was the appointment of Mr E. M. Blake. The board decided to hold their next meeting on January 17th.
