SPORTING NOTES.

(By “ The Plunger.”) It is really refreshing to visit the lower end of Victoria Park, Temuka, of an evening to see the different candidates for trotting honors perform in their training operations. Amongst the Maidens is the evergreen 'ur Maid, who, by the way, is in capital form, and is going well, and 1 should consider her the best of the local horses. Among the Farmers’ representatives it i sdifficult to say at present which is the best, as they all appear to be diffident about exposing their true form. But there are rumors of wonders of private trials being given, and in many instances 2.40 has been recorded. It is rather soon to speculate as to the prospective chances of this class, but amongst the most likely ones at present I give most respect to My Pony, Pilot Boy, and Thaa CJuum. Amongst frequent visitors to the track I notice the well-known sportsman, Mr T. Daley, of Liberator fame, who appears to have discarded the galloping business, and, taken t° trotting, and if May Moon is as good as reported, she will take a power of beating. I also notice our local enthusiasts ' Messrs MoMaster, Jenkins, Anglaud, 1 Gaffanoy, Washington, and Soannell; the latter creates a lot of amusement to colonials by the unpronouncable names of his horses. 1 Given fine ffdather 1 predict for the ■ initial meeting of the Temuka Trotting Club au unqualified success, as the ■ managem dnturroined to leave | nothing wanting fqr ttyo comfort of visitors, and to put down any corrupt < practice with a strong hand. ‘ Final tips will appear next week.
