THE COREAN TROUBLE.
London, Dec. 3. J The Timeß reporter, who was an eyewitness to the Fort Arthur engagement, in his report states that the Chinese used explosive u lletß. The Japs, he asserts, I>J 'A'aged the town, killing every one they could lay hands on, in revenge for the Chinese burning of Japanese prisoners alive. They also mutilated, ftlld di*;. embowelled scores of Chinese. 'Prisoners are reported on returning to Hiroshina to have informed the Japanese Minister of War, who W 8« apparently astounded, and vigorously deprecated the cruelty practised. A further Chinese loan of £12,000,000 at 4J per cent will shortly be placed on the English market. Many foreigners are, it is alleged, taking part in the preparations for the defence of Wehaiwei. It is reported that Great Britain, resenting the exclusion of peace negotiations by the Chinese, has doci led on making a naval demonstration off Chnsau. Washington, Dec. 3. Japan and China contiuuo to negotiate through the American Government for a basis of peace. It is possible that an armistice will be concluded at an early date. Shanghai, Dec. 4. The Japaueße are preparing for furthei attacks, and their transports are moving in a westerly direction. it is believed that the Mikado will claim a higher indemnity and mere onerous guarantee than China has offered. Tojuo, Dec 3. The Japauese Government have returned a favourable answer to the Chinese proposals for peace, but require further assurances that the Government will be
able to fulfil their offer. Meanwhile fighting will not cease. The Japanese Foreign Office has promised to inquire into the statements made by the Times correspondent as to the barbarity shown at Port Arthur. The Japanese insist on occupying the place until the conditions of peace are fulfilled.
