MICROBES IN ICE CREAM.

Dr Alfred Harris, medio..' parish of St. Mary, Islington, reco.. caused samples of ice cream sold iu the north of Loudon to bo taken, and also personally inspected, the premises at which Italians manufactured the article. He reported to the public health committee of the vestry on Monday that the commodity was manufactured in close yards, and the articles used in the manufacture nere flour, milk, eggs, sugar, and flavoring essences, which were for the most part stored in evil-smelling sleeping rooms. In no instance were the shells of the eggs used brokeu. They were pierced at each end and blown by the mouth, the perfect shells being sold to the proprietors of shooting galleries. Three samples of water taken from barrows and three samples of ice cream were submitted to Dr Klein, of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital on September 18th. Dr Klein reported that the first three samples were rendered turbid by small Jlocculi in suspension, and in each case there wat? a floccular white precipitate. A microscopic examination revealed in each of the samples of water and ice cream an abundance of microbes. The reports of both medical men were the subject of discussion, and it was suggested that representations should be made to the Local Government Board, urging them to introduce legislation to empower local authorities to register the vendors of these articles, as there was nothing iu the Public Health Act to prevent such sale.

ACCIDENTS OFFENCES, ETC. At Dunedin the wife .of Mr Moore, representative of the Shire line, died suddenly on Friday morning. She was a daughter of Mr Hugh Mac Neil. A single man named John McLeod fel from a horse on Taueru road, Masterton and fractured his skull, dying befor medical aid could be obtained. About midnight on Friday Charles Henry Wagstaff, a canvasser for the Lyttelton Times, who resides at Papanui, near Christchurch, found a man named Charles Langdon prowling about his premises, and attempting to get in at a servant girl’s window. -Wagstaff went outside, and as Langdon was running he discharged a gun at him, Langdon receiving the charge in the hip and band. Wagstaff informed a doctor and the police, and Langdon was removed to the hospital. Wagstaff was arrested and brought before the Court on Saturday morning, and remanded on bail lor a week. It is not known what Langdon’s motive was in going to the house. He is suffering from the shook, and has not been able to give an explanation. He is a married man and also lives at Papanui, working, at the butchering tiade. Wagstaff states that he did not fire with the intention of hitting the man. A Marton telegram says :—There were two fatal accidents near Ohingiatui on Thursday., In the case of Jonathan Lake Nazous, while bushfelling at Hautopu, a tree fell across bis body and killed him. The other case was that of McSweeney, at the co-operative works at Three, Log Whare, Who was killed by a fall of earth in a cutting ••••
