THE MAORI KING MOVEMENT.

Wellington, Deo. 2. The Evening Post has received a copy of the first number of the Native Laud Court Gazette, published on the 20th November at Cambridge, Waikato, under the authority of “ King Tawhiao the Aha o te Rang! Potatau te Wherowhero, King of the Independent Maori Kingdom of Aotearoa and Te Waipoumanui.” It is founded somewhat on the lines of the Government Kahiti Maori, and is well printed. The type has been set up entirely by young Natives. The first paragraph is a notification, signed by W. T. Taingakawa te Wabaroa, Premier of the Maori kingdom, stating that by Order-in-Council, dated the 27 th of August, 1893, and published the 25th of May, 1894, a separate Maori Native Land Court has been constituted and.placed under the administration of the Minister for the Crown and N ative Lands. The second paragraph fixes a sitting of the Court at Ohinemuri for the 20th of December, 1894, notifying that a block called Pukehange will then bo dealt with by the Judges who have been appointed ; that after a careful hearing a Crown grant will issue to the rightful owners under the authority of the Native kingdom, and such grant will for ever afterwards be protected and kept inviolate. This is signed T. K. Mauugapahatu Harawira, Registrar of the Native Land Court. The third paragraph fixes a sitting of the Maori Court at Te Hoe o Taiuui, for the 28th of February, 1895, to deal with an application for the rehearing of the Waitakaruru block case. The fourth paragraph fixes a sub-division Court at the same place and date, to determine the hapu boundaries of the Tauhei block* Then follow a number of other notices, issued under the Maori Land Court Act of 1884, dealing with several questions in which it is stated that dissatisfaction has been created through the action of the Hon. Te Pokaitawa, Minister of the Native Land Court in adjourning certain cases ; that the Hon. A. P. Rongowhitiao, Minister for Maori and Crown Landr, had postponed the hearing on account of the death of the late King, and appointing the Cth February as the final date of hearing. Three notices on the fourth page s(?t forbl> directions as to applying for orders for real and estate, thg property of deceased owbpr, mkken the following appointments to portfolios: M. H. T. Pokaitawa, Minister of tbg Maori Land Court; the Hon. A. P, Rongowhitao, Minister for Cfo^fg

tribal land. The concluding paragraph states as follows :—By virtue of the honor of a seat in his Majesty’s Executive Council, and under the authority of the same, the people are hereby informed that Te Ua Karanama Maungapahatu Harawira has been appointed .Registrar of the Native Land Court, under the separate and independent Maori kingdom of New Zealand. (Signed) W. T. Tainoakawa Tb Waharoa, Premier of the kingdom. One sentence m the Gazette is worthy of note. It declares that all Crown grants issued under King Tawhaio’s authority will be upheld and kept sacred and inviolate for ever and ever. The imprint sets forth that the Gazette is published under the authority of the Maori kingdom of Aoteoroa at Maungakawa, the 25th of November, 1894.
