THE WAIRARAPA DISASTER.
Auckland, Nov. 29. The police have received the following property from the Barrier found on the beach A puree containing £2 6a 6d and a shearer’s ticket, the property of David Hastie, a survivor, of Oatnaru, believed to be now in the Napier district—his brother Norman was among the drowned; several documents and letters in the name of James Charles White from Sydney and Melbourne; a Post Office Savings Bank book, No, 78002, in the name of Elias James, of Seacliffo, Otago, A dispute has arisen as to the ownership of 133 sovereigns found on’the body of George Bird, who was identified by Mr Johnston, the third officer of the Wairarapa. Mrs Mandersou, of Westport, claimed the money on the statement of two survivors, that they identify the h',g in which the money was as that of Mr Mandersou, and that Mandersou should have had about 140 sovereigns, as they came from Coolgardie with him, and kugw him.
Among the documents found is a steerage ticket, in the name of Wm. Johnston, aged thirty - two, for the steamship Austral Austral, an enclosed cabin berth. Mrs Foster Brown, wife of a stereotyper in the Herald Office, has been identified as among those buried.
