ACCIDENTS, OFFENCES, ETC.

At New Plymouth a boy seven years old, son of Mr W. J. Orr, Bell block, was nearly blown to pieces on Wednesday night when playing with a flask of gunpowder. He poured some powder into the fire and the flask exploded. He was taken to the hospital iu a critical condition. The body of Robert Forbes, of East Invercargill, was found in the Oreti, at Lumsden, on Wednesday. Deceased was a trustee of money belonging to his sister, and had arranged to lend it to a settler at Mossburn. He left town on Monday to inspect the property, and it is supposed that he was drowned in trying to cross the river, which was in flood. Mr Forbes was a married man, aged 64, his family being grown up. A commercial traveller staying at the Royal Hotel, Waimate, was robbed of his purse, containing £ll (nearly all iu gold), on Monday night. Two men were suspected and they were arrested at Oamaru, having caught the tram at Waitaki. A number of sovereigns were found on them. At Wellington a permanent artilleryman named Jeremiah Brosnan died suddenly from diabetes. At the inquest it was shown that the deceased had been supplied with opium, unknown to the doctor, by a chemist named Brittain, and the jury added a rider to their verdict to the effect that his (Brittain’s) conduct was deserving of the severest reprehension.
