ACCIDENTS, OFFENCES, ETC.
Mrs Esther Wilds, 64, a very old settler in Timaru, was drowned iu a dam on Monday afternoon. About 3 o'clock she took her husband a drink of tea, and at 5.30 she was found by her husband, Mr John Wilds, drowned in a dam. It is supposed the old lady was looking for eggs around the banks of the dam, aud slipped in. An Auckland telegram says :—" On an inspection of the personal property left by Gadsby Probert, who committed suicide, it was fonnd that he had £43 odd in the Auckland Savings Bank. Leaving oat the statement of his relatives he had not been left in necessitous circumstances. Other letters of character besides those read at the inquest were found." A body has been washed ashore near Moturoa, supposed to be that of Scauude", who was supposed to have gone out fishing in a canoe, and who has been missing for a week. The Maori girl burned to death at Whangaruru, Auckland, was the daughter of a Maori named Karena. In placing a titrion the fire her clothing caught fire.
