THE WAIRARAPA DISASTER.
The Wellington contributions to the Wairarapa relief fund now amount to £486. It is believed that Profes or Ranley, late of Amberley, North Canterbury, was among the passengers lost in the Wairarapa disaster. He came into a considerable sum of money lately, and was coming to make his home again in New Zealand. The amount now in the hands of the Mayor of Christchurch is £IOB 18s fid. The profit accruing from the Wairarapa Relief Fund Stakes, run at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting on Thursday, was £132 18s, At Dunedin it has been suggested by admirers of the heroic conduct of Miss McQuaid, stewardess of the Wairarapa, that a testimonial forwarded to her parents would be a suitable mode of recognition, and a subscription for that purpose has been started. Five Oamaru residents are now reported to have lost their lives by the wreck, viz,, Messrs Harland, Bailey, Cree, Dean, and Hastie, and a sixth is spoken of.
