HEAVY STORM IN DUNEDIN.
One of the severest tropical downpours of rain and hail ever experienced at Dun* edin came on on Saturday afternoon. At five o’clock the clouds gathered swiftly, and as it became dark almost as night they began to circle as if the town were the centre of a cyclone. Presently they discharged their contents, rain and hau falling almost in a body. The hailstones were remarkably large, and the lightning was vivid. The streets were flooded in a few seconds, and as the downpour eon* tinued, the shops were flooded and thousands of pou nda-worth of damage were done in Maclaggan and Rattray street, which are outlets for the discharge from the hills. Empty tanks were to be seen floating down the street channels. In some streets the channels were torn up. The cellars in Rattray street were flooded, and probably many warehouses in Bond and Lower High streets. In Princes’ street Mr Braithwaite suffered severely. In George street the loss of many shopkeepers is very heavy. Messrs Fyfe & Gumming had fully £SOO worth of goods damaged, ft severe loss following on Mr Fyfe’s loss of his wife and child in the Wairarapa. Messrs A. and T. Inglis, of the City Boot Palace, and others also suffered.
