S.C. BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The monthly meeting of the Board of Education was held on Thursday, Present —Mr S. W. Goldsmith (chairman), Revs. G. Barclay and J. White, Messrs R. H. Pearpoint, W. B. Howell, and J. Jackson. chairman’s statement. In his opening statement the chairman said the boundariespf several new districts had beon made out, one M the old districts affected being Woodbury. Miss Fyfe had taken Miss Bruce’s place temporarily at Temuka; the committee wished to promote Mr Strong to the vacancy, and call for a teacher for his post. This recommendation was approved and acted on by the office. The capitation for the current quarter is to be paid on the working average of last quarter ; the difference between the strict and working average was only 30. The amount of building grant had been notified, £1750 ; this would not suffice for much more than* to repay the overdraft on building grant. TEACHERS RAIL FARES, A letter from the Secretary for Education in reply to one complaining that the Railway Commissioners had withdrawn the concession of cheap fares to teachers attending Saturday classes, stated that the Commissioners would make no difficulty about granting the tickets to teachers if the instruction which they wished to gain were imparted at classes under the auspices of the Board and at which their attendance would be checked, but there is an objection to making concessions to persons in circumstances in which there can be no guarantee that the privilege would be used only for its legitimate purpose. It was explained that the teachers have to go to private instructors as the board has no classes. There had also been some abuse of the low rates. BOARD COMMITTEES. The chairman and Messrs Barclay and Jackson were appointed a building committee ; aud Messrs Barclay, White, and Gray a scholarship committee. in connection with the scholarships Mr Barclay asked whether the board could give a scholarship tenable at Lincoln College, and as there was some doubt about it he requested that information be looked. He thought it would be a very good thing, if the board would do it, to send boys where they would learn something of practical value. APFOINTMFNTS. Committee’s recommendations were approved and confirmed : —Mr P. Colbert to be sole teacher at Haka Valley ; Mrs Hinch to be sewing mistress and Mr Packer pupil teacher at Hannaton; Miss E. Campbell to be fourth teacher at Temuka. The Temuka Committee recommended Miss G. Brown or Miss Campbell, and the board appointed the latter as the former has an appointment and the latter has not. The committee’s recom--1 mendation for the promotion of Mr , Strong was approved, i Mr Smith having declined the appointi ment at Bangitata Station, it was resolved , to offer the post to Mr R. Irwin, who had ‘ also applied and been recommended for it. Miss Kelly was appointed sewing mistress at Upper Waitohi.
